My in-laws are in their mid 80s, live in Brooklyn, Michigan, at Lake Columbia.  They were without power for four days. Stubborn as hell we couldn’t get them to go to a hotel. They were freezing. Now DTE is saying they will give them a $35 break on their next utility bill. That’s insulting.

Has Whitmer said anything?

Don't know about the Govenor herself, however the legislature and the SoS are weighing in on the power outages.

As for the waste from the derailment, technically the landfills in Michigan are licensed for exactly that type of waste, so if Michigan citizens are upset by that there is a much larger issue than this particular waste flow. There are politicians also weighing in on this ...

I don't know how much she's quietly fuming about this situation but it is a big deal. We should have started laying all utility infrastructure underground 50 years ago in this state. Of course that resilience costs money, and it required forward thinking that scientists knew what they were talking about 50 years ago when climate change became a hypothesis and hindsight is 20/20. Nevertheless, it's kind of refreshing that a politician isn't saying something until the situation is analyzed and facts are gathered. I guess she could at least say that.

Politically she should be saying something - leaving the other side to define the issues is poor leadership.
