McDaniel told anchor Shannon Bream Republican candidates should put Democrats "on the defensive and articulate where you stand."
Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson told CNN’s "State of the Union" on Sunday he would sign a federal abortion ban if elected, but he'd "advocate for the exceptions of the life of the mother" and in cases of rape or incest.
"I believe that’s where the American public is," the former Arkansas governor added. "I don't think anything will come out of Congress without those exceptions. And I certainly would sign a pro-life bill, but I would expect those exceptions to be in place."

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has been trying to tell her Republican colleagues the same thing. She has repeatedly said the party's preferred abortion policies are way too restrictive, out of touch with voters, and will cost the party seats. So far, the party is ignoring her even though she is probably right. I believe she said she supports abortion access out to 20 weeks.
On another note, it is possible that some of these folks vying for the 2024 Republican nomination are speaking exclusively to primary voters, which means being more ideological before pivoting to a more moderate position to win non-ideological voters in a general election. This was a common strategy for candidates from both parties until Trump, who never pivoted to anything moderate, so it might not be applicable to the GOP anymore. Also, a candidate like Desantis (even though he has not declared) actually has a policy record so this is not a strategy available to him.

Desantis signed a law limiting abortion to 6 weeks, which is before anyone knows they are pregnant.
One of the major voting blocks for Republican primaries are the anti-woman rights (anti-abortion stands in for that but there are many more restrictions they want) groups which include various religious groups and also include various fascist mostly male mostly white male privilege groups. Pro Choice candidates need not apply.
In the past it seemed as though a Republican could swing to the middle in the general election, however the primary voters, with the modern communication tech, are much better informed on what their representatives are doing and hold them to what they said in the primaries.
The SCOTUS tore the scab off the Roe v Wade bandage only to find that a significant majority of the voters didn't want it torn off, and now the Republicans are in a pickle.

The GOP just keeps pushing Gen z and women voters further away. When the SCOTUS overturned Roe I was bummed. Turns out that might be the best thing that happened for progressives.

Back on our old wells hall stomping grounds, we discussed this happening at length when the whole Amy coney barret crap was going down and it was beginning to sink in that she was going to definitely push her religious ideology on the court. We said that if Republicans succeeded there would be tremendous backlash against them for it and it would motivate the left. It has certainly happened as predicted. However if I'm being honest, I thought the backlash would be bigger and more sustained. I firmly believe SCOTUS itself leaked the Roe opinion in advance to try to take the wind out of the sails, and it worked to some extent. Roe overturned, everyone knew it was coming. It was met with backlash but nothing near debilitating levels. This is an issue that should get bigger national outcry than George Floyd and everything that came after. So far it is failing in that regard but the left are indeed motivating. I'm hoping where the immediate backlash was subdued, a more sustained get out the vote effort can prevail and we can have many years of trend bucking high to democrat turnout like the last mod term. Hopefully this is the lefts tea party and we can succeed in getting gerrymandering outlawed in a bunch of states, win back state governments, and vote in democrat majorities in all branches so this regressive and unamerican nightmare can end.

And the beat goes on...

There was a reason, beyond just good law, that the court ruled they way they did in Roe v Wade.

Almost a year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, 40 percent of women said they believe abortion should be legal under any circumstances, according to new polling from Gallup. The findings of the poll show how Roe’s fall shifted public opinion on abortion, leaving more Americans in favor of access to the procedure and critical of banning it.
In 2019, Gallup found that 25 percent of Americans believed abortion should be available under any circumstances. Now, 34 percent of Americans, about 1 in 3, believe abortion should be legal at any point. That increase appears driven almost entirely by women.

CNN’s new poll shows that abortion isn’t fading from the public’s consciousness. In fact, it’s doing quite the opposite. Asked, “How do you feel about the Court overturning Roe vs. Wade?,” just 36% of respondents approve, with 64% disapproving. That’s a two-thirds majority of the American electorate furious at the Supreme Court’s decision to strip away key rights. Those numbers are essentially unchanged from one year ago.

turns out that women (and men who respect women) don't want libertarians/republicans to tell them what they can and can't do with their own body.
shocking, right.
