North Korean border crossers
BBC: The latest US-North Korea spat is a high-risk moment for Biden
I say let the idiot rot. At this point, we should all be well aware of the risks of crossing into NK, especially illegally. If someone is dumb enough to intentionally put themselves in that situation, I see no reason why we should lift a finger or spend a single tax dollar trying to get them out.

I guess it depends. That article doesn’t make it sound like it’s just some asshole. He’s an active member of the military that apparently was facing discipline of some kind. So, was he trying to defect? If so and he knows stuff NK would want then I’d want to get him back do he can rot here. Was he trying to defect and knows nothing? Let him rot. Did he actually go there intentionally or was he captured? Who says that he just stumbled across the line? Is that according to NK?
So anyway I dunno lots of stuff that could suggest we should drag his ass back

I'm basing my position on this, which would seem to indicate he did it on purpose.
I hope he doesn't know anything that we wouldn't want to get out, but I'm sure they'll torture him plenty, whether they eventually give him back or not.
The American military has said he did so "wilfully and without authorisation".
An eyewitness on the same tour told CBS they had visited a building at the border site - reported by local media to be the truce village of Panmunjom - when "this man gives out a loud 'ha ha ha' and just runs in between some buildings".
"I thought it was a bad joke at first but, when he didn't come back, I realised it wasn't a joke and then everybody reacted and things got crazy," they said.

My MSU roommate was ROTC. Army Captain. Was in charge of something in South Korea. He could push buttons with the best of them... maybe he drove the dude to defection.

Re: North Korean border crossers
North Korea isn’t overflowing with resources.
They are going to observe the AWOL US Army soldier for a period of time and have to decide if he has propaganda value or decide he’s batshit crazy and begin negotiations for an exchange for North Korean(s) held as spies.
If the later occurs I hope the US let’s him stay where he ran.
