blanch I'm not sure if you realize this - probably not because you don't care about anything but yourself - but I work remotely. My company is located in Florida. Most of my clients are European. I could literally live in Abu Dhabi if I wanted to. I also lived in Austin, TX after graduating MSU and I chose to move back. Have never looked back for one second.
This is a really stupid topic. I like it here. You may not. That is totally your choice and I respect that choice. And I don't give two flying fucks if you, Nucky, or anyone else can't understand that. Of course you can't.

Like I said, I know more people who live and prosper in Michigan than can (and some do) enjoy the best that other states have to offer compared to the people who live there.
Some people move to Florida because they love the beach, boats and bitches, but they have none of that. They live in a ghetto or a swamp. They come visit us when we vacation. They love it, because they never see the good side of Florida (which is Gulf side, within 100 feet of the water).
So anyway, how is Ohio? You roasting marshmallows on the river that's on fire?

Ever been to upstate New York? Or rural New Jersey? Or even whatever there is on Long Island.
NYC is pretty ****ing sweet, I like it, don't get me wrong... but there's a lot of pretentious motherfuckers here. The people of Manhattan are some real ****ing pieces of work. People that are annoying come in all different flavors and socioeconomic backgrounds.

San Diego is gonna be a steady 80* this week. Glad I moved. Don't get me wrong I miss home every once in a while but the 2-3 trips back each year are enough for me.

Moved to Austin in 2009 and absolutely love living here. One of the things I look forward to most throughout the year is a trip back to Michigan to head up north. Waking up on Christmas morning without snow kind of sucks. I live right by the lake here so I have that going for me. The summers are hot but manageable if you have a boat or a pool. The restaurants here are absolutely amazing. Traffic sucks. The beer scene here has come a long way since 2009 and Texas is brewing some great shit. I dont miss the slushy, salty shit that's tracked into the car and house. People here are terrible drivers. The cost of living is pretty impressive but is going in the wrong direction because Austin has become one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Who likes my sentences ? It's all over the place because I have been drinking

I forgot to add. No state income tax in Texas but we have high property taxes. A lot of hot ass running around although I was always of the opinion that Michigan is very underrated in terms of hot chicks.

Forbes' list of the happiest states:
1. North Dakota
2. South Dakota
3. Nebraska
4. Minnesota
I assume most people would say "why the hell would anyone want to live in those boring cold places"

Austin is great but it seems like it's going to become California, because all the California people realized that they fucked up California and are trying to do it all over again in Austin.
If you own a place in Austin, it will serve you well. If not, buy one soon (or 8 years ago).

Do you out of staters notice when you meet people from Michigan they are always the nicest coolest people?
I always thought that but maybe it was my bias or just that you have something in common to talk about.

In certain locations, Michigan is very underrated in terms of chicks. The thing is, a good portion live in Metro Detroit, and they all believe they are two points hotter than they really are.

I've never been to Minneapolis(would hate the snow), but have interacted with a ton of people from there. Have always found them to be down to Earth and generally great people.

I think it's just the common ground. There are plenty of douchers from Michigan but mostly people have, like you said, the common talking points and such and we can reminisce about home and stuff.

I'm surprised the Dakotas are 1 and 2. With the oil boom it's like a sausage fest out there. Read an article last year while I was there talking about how hard it was for dudes to meet eligible chicks.

Re: Why are you still living in the state of Michigan?
because I can live in a lovely, tree-lined neighborhood in East Lansing, walk or ride my bike to work, raise my daughter (sorry Forbin) in an excellent, high-achieving school district, enjoy the most wonderful season of all - winter - with cross-country skiing, winter running and snow shoeing.. I love shoveling... especially with a beer stuck in a snow bank to sip on in between trips up and down my driveway.
to the OP, I certainly hope you enjoy living where you live, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.. East Lansing is great.

I'll respond to Nucky because everyone else seems to be... I'd live in Traverse City in a heartbeat if my wife and I could earn the same money there that we earn in Phoenix. In fact, if we could earn the same there as we do here then I'd keep my house and fly here twice a month during the winter. But I'm not from Michigan and I don't really know many other places besides TC and East Lansing so I really can't comment on anywhere else. Michigan is a beautiful state, though.
Agreed... Traverse City would be pretty ****ing sweet.

And the traffic, what people perceive as nightmarish traffic there is a breeze every where else. Even driving up to EL for the football game, everything moved right along but the people in the car were like 'Oh no, TRAFFIC!!!'.
Drive through the Holland Tunnel on any given day of the week, it's a million times worse.

Because Michigan is home. My family is here, my friends are here, my life is here, and there's always lots to do. Yes, we have our share of losers, but every state does. Yes, we have our share of crappy weather, but again, every state does. I'll take snow storms over hurricanes any day. Every state has its natural beauty, but I think ours is by far the prettiest, because we have everything: forests, mountains, AND coast.
Also, MSU. DUH.
