Oregon and DC legalize marijuana
This is taking far too long, can't we just do it all at once and be done with it?

Three Michigan cities pass ordinances decriminalizing marijuana
Pleasant Ridge, Berkley and Huntington Woods all overwhelmingly vote to decriminalize. Moral victory.

Sounds good.
Let's stop ****ing around and being bronze aged dicks and legalize everything. LEGALIZE. EVERYTHING.
Only then will freedom ring.

What's the deal with needing 60% of the vote?

Can't be an election without talking about Florida. I have no idea. I do like how it got 58% which typically means it's supported, but it failed.xsanguine wrote:What's the deal with needing 60% of the vote?

Re: Oregon and DC legalize marijuana
60% vote is required to amend the state constitution. Not sure if that's common in other states, but considering the US constitution requires a 2/3 majority vote in Congress to amend (and then ratified by 3/4 of the states), it's not that crazy of an idea.InTenSity wrote:

If you're voting to continue the practice of armed men in costumes forcing people into cages or financial hardship over the possession of plant materials or plant alkaloids then shame on you. You're a disgrace to any non-ISIS leaning peoples.

I am shocked that it didn't pass, what with such great campaigners like this guy (and this is an actual pic that my wife took yesterday):InTenSity wrote:Florida voted no. Old people are still scared of reefer madness.
And FTR, I'm not posting this as an opposition to the amendment, rather just because I thought this was funny....but I have to think that this hurts the movement more than it helps it, to the point that I wonder if this was done by the opponents to the amendment to make it look like this is what the state will become. It would be like having a wino or alcoholic wife beater trying to get people to support the 21st Amendment in 1933.

Re: Oregon and DC legalize marijuana
6 months ago, 88% of Floridians approved of passing medical marijuana. It was a done deal. And then Sheldon Alderson, Mr Morality himself, and owner of casinos and guy who is trying to get casinos legalized in Miami, comes form out state and pours $5 million into the anti campaign. Runs scare ad campaign with zero factual support all across the state of all the bad things that may or may not happen or be in the bill. And that convinces 30% of the morons who voted to change their vote.
CREAM.

How does it not align with his views. He strongly believes in freedom, and has talked repeatedly about limiting the government's reach into society.
Are you saying he doesn't like freedom, and that while he thinks we should be left alone to make rational decisions regarding our individual economic well-being it should be the state that determines moral behavior? I mean, is anybody really that inconsistent?

TBF, couldn't that same inconsistency apply the other way, as well?Turtleneck wrote:

Do you mean those people that want the state to refrain from creating universal moral and ethical standards, but also want the state to regulate the economy to the point that creating collective equality is pursued at the expense of individual freedom? If so, then the answer is absolutely.

I gotcha. To me it's an indictment of who is actually voting and how easily they are swayed by bullshit. So someone who believes it's not cool to enslave people over plants drives a ratty car.... must vote against drug repeal!
It still amazes me that people have a right, in this country, to determine what others do in their spare time. I wonder if they realize or even think about what happens when someone does do that in their spare time and the scary guys in costumes with guns find out. Because they don't politely ask them to stop (which would still be an abomination).
Ahh well. I have a deep, visceral hatred for the drug war (all drugs) and what it represents... so I like to argue about it to no end.

And now Mary Jane has hit the State Fair in Oregon.
Hold that blueberry pie; the Oregon state fair is now judging best marijuana
Hold that blueberry pie; the Oregon state fair is now judging best marijuana
To the list of breakthroughs in an ever-changing world where cars drive themselves, faces are surgically transplanted and Russian hackers are accused of manipulating the U.S. presidential campaign, add this development: marijuana growers can now compete for blue ribbons in the state fair.
That’s what Oregon officials say will happen at their fair in Salem next month. Besides tastiest apple pie and plumpest pig, pot will be judged for its finer attributes, including color, aroma, leaf structure and lack of pests.
The top growers will become the nation’s first-ever winners of a state fair ribbon honoring a farm crop outlawed by the federal government. For some, the contest effectively adds another H to the 4-H Club: Herb.

Gallup: Record high 60% of Americans back legal pot
When Gallup first asked about this issue in 1969, 12 percent of Americans supported legalization. By 2000, support had increased to 31 percent and has continued climbing since then, reaching 58 percent last year.

Re: Oregon and DC legalize marijuana
My biggest question on legalization is have they found a way to quantify how stoned a person is while driving. Alcohol is easy to quantify. Not sure about weed. I think is should be legal, but just like any substance that can impair your reflexes, there needs to be solid science of when a person is legally stoned and shouldn't be driving.
Another smaller question I have is getting over that smoking can have 'health' benefits. I just can't get over that smoking anything can be 'good' for you. If you take it in another form, then I can get past that.
But to actually do the science to see the health effects weed has, it needs to go through the rigors of FDA testing, and it needs to be legalized. Seems like a no brainer to me. Legalize and test. See if the medical claims made of the stuff are true or not. If there's no medical benefit, then how is it different than being drunk? None, imo. So either way, legalize and don't fucking get behind the wheel of car.

I think it differs from alcohol with regards to driving. The effects of those two substances is very different. It would be fair to compare heroin or ketamine or acid to alcohol because they're all potent highs. Weed seems to be somewhere in between tobacco at the low end and cocaine or hydrocodone. Not that I think driving around on any substances isn't a good idea and it's effects are going to be different for each person, but I think alcohol vs weed is an incorrect equivalency.

Those things aren't really legal though, hence the comparison of two things that alter in some way your normal state/reflexes
