Re: Net Neutrality
Holy shit, this guys a fuckin comedian.
The FCC has “pried open the door to heavy-handed government regulation in a space celebrated for its free enterprise,” Michael Powell, president of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association trade group that has Comcast among its members, said in an e-mailed statement. “The commission has breathed new life into the decayed telephone regulatory model and applied it to the most dynamic, free- wheeling and innovative platform in history.”

Morally I'm not sure what you're paying, but fiscally, no, you don't pay more. The basic premise that the ISP's wanted to do is charge companies extra in order to make sure that going to their site wasn't slowed down. Right now, you can go to any 'legal' site and it shouldn't matter where you go the speed should be the same. The theory is that you pay for Internet, well now Facebook has to pay to make sure people can get to their site, so the ISP's force Facebook to pay them, forcing Facebook to pass the cost on to the consumer.Robert J Sakimano wrote:do I pay extra now? Someone else who is better at explaining a Podcast can step in and try to explain it. I know you aren't quite that stupid, but at times you do want ELI5.

yeah the level of a 5 year old is usually sufficient. Though I'm still not certain what a podcast is. Seems like it's just kind of a interview with someone that you can listen to later..?InTenSity wrote:

Although I've never listened to a podcast, imagine it like an MP3 or a digital song, only longer and yes, usually someone talking. I guess you could listen to blank nothingness as well though.Robert J Sakimano wrote:

Yeah, if you actually read the article, this is a whole lot of nothing.
The same fee on your phone bill that brought phone service to rural America could possibly be added to your broadband bill to bring broadband service to rural America.
That's just fucking heresy!!! I am outraged!!! $3 dollars more per fucking month to surf porn?!?!?!? Outrageous!!!
You shouldn't let the media jerk your chain like that Dude. Just chill.

Re: Net Neutrality
A federal appeals court has voted to uphold a series of strict new rules for Internet providers, handing a major victory to regulators in the fight over net neutrality and ensuring that one of the most sweeping changes to hit the industry in recent years will likely remain on the books.
The court ruling Tuesday forces Internet providers such as Verizon and Comcast to obey federal regulations that ban the blocking or slowing of Internet traffic to consumers. The regulations from the Federal Communications Commission also forbid carriers from selectively speeding up websites that agree to pay the providers a fee — a tactic critics have said could unfairly tilt the commercial playing field against startups and innovators who may not be able to afford it.

Re: Net Neutrality
It appears now though, that the providers are going after the usage angle. Comcast just stealthily raised the limit from 250 gb/month to 1 TB/month, but changed the wording. Previously, if you went over the 250, you could buy 50 more for $10, that is the same, or you could pay an additional $30 for unlimited. They have taken that option away and capped it at billing no more than $200 a month if you use that much bandwidth.
The reason I hate shit like this, is Comcast is correct, right now, at this juncture, that is going to cover 99% of consumers. But they are jumping out in front of the big data hogs, like 4k streaming. I wish some of these companies were broken up, or there was someway to get more competition.

I haven't watched this yet, though it's at home on my DVR, so there's that caveat.
However, without even knowing the content, I'm all for whatever he says. He effectively crashed the FCC site last night. While it's not on the FCC per se to fight legislation, there's no reason public comments can't be directed at them.
This is still a f'ed up hand we're being dealt.

Re: Net Neutrality
If there is money to be made this administration seems to be for it.
We are already limited by choices and despite the bullshit about free markets look no further than Lansing and East Lansing to see what an alternative to Comcast and ATT have to do to provide a faster, cheaper alternative.
Lightspeed has had to fight for easements.
Where I live and where most of the posters here live the cable providers have sweetheart deals with local municipalities so outfits like Lightspeed can't use existing power poles.
Have always thought ISP's should be a public utility like electric and water.
