You're right. Apparently I didn't know that Cook was "better" than Maxwell. After the spring game I advocated for Cook to play over Maxwell. I knew that Cook was at least as good, had some different skills, and needed to play over Maxwell because Maxwell had shown he wasn't the guy. I knew that it wasn't worth wasting another season with Andrew Maxwell as the QB no matter how great the coaches said he looked in practice or how great an arm he had or how well he grasped the offense. Then again, you still thought Maxwell should be playing when he came in against ND right? You know, since the coaches thought so.

I'll stick with my opinion on the issue and you can stick with your opinion that coaches never make mistakes and, therefore, you are never wrong.

Cook was hurt in the ND game.

I'll play along with your "argument". If (as you claim) my point is that coaches never make mistakes, and you are arguing the opposite...can you tell me (after a BigTen and Rose Bowl Championship) how Dantonio mishandled the QB position? Is that what you're arguing? That the coaches made mistakes? Where and how were you right under this scenario?

Yeah, I did. He sure didn't seem like he thought he needed to come out and Dantonio didn't say anything about him being hurt being the reason they took him out. If it was don't you think he would have said that? A lot easier to explain than putting Maxwell in to "change the pace" or because they thought he would run the 2 minute offense better.

Right. I would expect a head coach to advertise that his QB was hurt. Good call.

Jesus. It's easy to "play along" if you pretend that mistakes can't happen within the course of something successful. Yes, they made a mistake starting Maxwell. They made 1000x more good decisions than bad. The ultimate success of the team does nothing to prove that Maxwell was correctly named the starter. Maybe we go undefeated if Cook is the starter going into game 1. No one knows.

Just because I think the coaches made a mistake doesn't mean I didn't want Maxwell to succeed when he was in the game. You can question decisions without withdrawing support. Our coaching staff is extraordinary, but not infallible.

A coach is not going lie and to make himself look worse, especially when the team has a bye the next week. If you actually believe that neither Cook nor Dantonio said the reason he was pulled was due to injury in order to hide it from Iowa, who we played 2 weeks later, I don't know what to tell you.

So, you're right based on a hypothetical that maybe if Cook started the 1st game, we would have gone undefeated? Thanks for clearing that up.

Clark Brown in 1983 is a bit misleading. He started the year as a 3rd stringer and should have never seen the field. He played only because Yarema and then Rich Kolb were injured within minutes in the seasons third game.

The 83 team had a chance to be damn good until Yarema got hurt.. They were coming off a huge win at ND and controlling the game against Illinois ( when Illinois was actually good). when both Yarema and his back up went down for the year. Brown was way over his head and the season went south in a hurry.

Never to this day will understand the hate for Bill Burke. Beat the Gators in the Citrus Bowl (somebody had to throw to Plaxico). Set the then-MSU career touchdown passes mark with 46 after three against Florida and became only the second Spartan to have two 2,000-yard passing seasons after Tony Banks.

Sure, the guy was prone to a few bonehead plays, but in the end he helped guide the Spartans to their best season in over a decade.

Todd Schultz for me. He completely quit and just didn't care if Michigan won. So he, and a couple other teams going full retard, and we had to endure the first Michigan National Title since 1948. While Michigan fans would still be arrogant on the internets, it would be more funny if their last title was in 1948 as opposed to 1997.

My thoughts on Maxwell. I think that he just was not a gamer at all, he had all the physical tools, and he was great in practice. The coaches thought that they had another Cousins, and that Maxwell would get it done.

When Maxwell first started against Boise State, I think he did really well, but he was let down by his receivers. Then, he was let down by his offensive line against Notre Dame, and then he was let down by his offensive coordinator, everything blew up in his head, and he went all Todd Schultz on us and lost his confidence. Every time I saw a Roushar interview, I couldn't see how that guy would instill confidence in anyone, so I doubt he could help build someone back up if they couldn't do it themselves.

I believe that when the next season came around, Maxwell still outperformed Cook in practice, and again the coaches thought about his physical tools, but then through the first few games it was shown that he just didn't have it in games.

So to recap:

Maxwell started out well.
His receivers let him down.
His offensive line let him down.
His OC let him down.
...and finally, he let himself down.

Never saw Todd Schultz play, Maxwell is the only starting qb at msu I got to watch that didn't have nfl aspirations, so I don't think my assessment is very valuable. Dowdell I guess goes in there too but he was never supposed to be a starting quarterback.

Maxwell's run out of bounds against nd was the lowest moment I've ever seen from an msu player. Until that game I thought he'd end up being the starter the rest of the way because cook looked awful through four games as well. That gutless play sealed it for cook, and the rest is history
