On the real, though, there was a Mr. Smith at my high school. The name is sufficiently generic that I think many/most of us can say that. So I'll just state for the record that I went to Eaton Rapids (same as Alex Gauna, I graduated with his older brother). Wake/OTPT, were you guys Greyhounds? Probably not...

I know quite a lot of Eaton Rapids people that went to MSU, but I'm only aware of tDPR having a RCMB presence. She was one year ahead of me. You probably know her better than I do.

I saw Pumpkins at the Breslin in 97 and then once in 93/94, don't remember the venue but it was EL. Never saw them after that.
Was almost able to go to their last show in Chicago but it fell through.

94 was in Breslin, a good show that I didn't go to. 97 show in Breslin was a train wreck, post Jimmy exit AND some skanks I had promised tickets too backed out so I had to scalp their tix at the last minute. Made my money back but go no ass
PS Karen and Janelle if you are out there, eat a fat dick bitches
PPS Here is a boot of that 94 show:
http://relisten.net/smashing-pumpkins/1994/4/22
PPPS Had an in for the final show at the Metro as well....tix fell through as some skank ate up the last available ticket my friends scored. A bunch of us did get to the next to last show at the United Center where some dude behind us got so fucking drunk that a quarter of the way through the first set said "dude I'm so drunk I can't even see anymore."

First tour show, in Saginaw(the Detroit gig sold out uber fast and the people like me that bought tix for the added show in Saginaw thought it was scraps). Turns out the entire band spent the days leading up the show at Darci's family farm just outside of town, WOTS was that Jimmy drove his Ferrari from Chicago and since they were staying in the sticks he couldn't score his smack....thus the show was one of the few in that era when he was 100% clean.

But isn't Darci's farm outside South Haven?
Jimmy couldn't just drive down to like 7 mile? The fuck is wrong with him?

Its the story I have heard from a number of sources at this point. They stayed on the west side of the state for at least a few days, if he brought a stash with him from Chicago it would have ran out. IIRC they drove to Saginaw the afternoon of the show and met with the crew, did a short soundcheck, and then played. No time for him to hit the streets to chase any dragons. That show was fucking tits...oh and Garbage opened and Shirley Manson was still young and hot:

Re: tSwill night crew
I figured out why musicians lose it as they get older.
When you're younger you'll spend weeks and months and sometimes years trying to perfect a song. You'll mix and match verses and choruses and bridges and figuring out ways to implement B verses and B choruses and what not. After you succeed and are around the upper echelon of the music business and start worrying about things like deadlines you stop searching for perfection... not even cause you're getting lazy but after you've been saturated, surrounded in that crowd you believe that you're able to just write it out without trusting the process. You end up trusting your success. Not to mention as you get older you naturally become less worried about the most obscure aspect of a project... which I, again, attribute to being saturated in the business and trusting what you believe is your natural eye for talent rather than trusting your abilities that achieved that success.
It's why musicians who make it and try to start their own record labels never sign anyone worth a damn. Never trust a famous musician's record label. You have to trust the guys who feel they have something to prove... the guys who haven't succeeded or have had mild success.
I think this is why Billy Corgan can't write a fucking song anymore. His ego doesn't allow him to even see this.
What the fuck is up with his vocals? Remember when he used to have an edgy growl, a love it or hate voice? Now he's smoothed it out and is trying to sing all proper and what not... which, theoretically, probably appeals to a wider base but because he's not a singer and was able to define himself by that screaming banshee to delicate angel... no one gives a fucking shit.
He needs to try to fuck his voice up again. He's past his prime so there's no reason to save his voice for anything in the future because he's beyond the future. Fucking piece of shit.

Maybe....but in 96 I think he still had some personal control and after being clean for a chunk(as the story goes for this particular show) they were as "family" as they had been in years...it made for the perfect storm of a show. No doubt within days or hours afterwards he probably almost killed himself getting high, but that night was like some sort of rare event. Too bad just a few months later he was almost dead and pretty much enabled the death of the keyboard player...Like I said, that particular show was just some sort of magic resulting in the perfect show.

Funny... the same corner that Jimmy bought those infamous RedRum bags here in NYC is still a busy corner for that kind of traffic; despite the gentrification.

To this day I still remember listening to the Mellon Collie album being played for the first time live on a syndicated radio show nation wide, locally in EL on 92.1 the EDGE.

92.1 was the shit. Somewhere at my parent's house I still have cassettes of just radio being played for an hour or so.... that's what you had to do in order to get a new release on tape (without buying it), ya know.
I got Green Day's J.A.R. that way. (Angus Soundtrack is still fucking awesome)
I still remember the first time I heard Today. I was in the van with my dad turning onto the Pennsylvania on-ramp to I-496 towards E.L.

I have some great stories about 92.1....Ended up on the IN with a few of the DJs, ended up in charge of security for their Oktoberfest shows in Old Town for a few years. Tons of stories.....broke up a fight during Creed(lol)s set and got some dude arrested, later on some dude got up on stage and I tackled his ass and gave his kidneys a serious beating, threw him down the stage steps to waiting cops to get arrested(knew the Lansing cop on duty LOL), drank endlessly for free in the beer tent, etc....Also I was known as a "prize pig" for being able to be the 3rd caller so often to win stuff: 2 ski trips to Boyne, bus trip to Chicago to see Pearl Jam, etc...

Damn son! I was never able to win anything on those call in things.
I got to have my song requests played on the radio a few times... I thought that was pretty cool as a youngin'.
How crazy that Lansing had two actual rock stations at once. Those were the fucking days... the Edge and Buzz 95.
If I had a time machine...

and Q106 playing harder stuff....Buzz 95 was Country I think before it was rock, and it was rock before it was country....
PS After meeting the DJs at the first Oktoberfest me and a friend used to troll the chick DJ Mel when she was on, one night she was bitching about her stockings running or some shit so we hit the store and bought a cheap pair and showed up outside the studio window on MAC. Yada yada yada invited in and got to be the guest DJs for an entire shift, then got wasted with her and the intern/receptionist that had a HUGE rack lol.
PS I still have a bunch of the CDs I "won" from them that have a screw hole through the barcode that was done at the time to prevent resale.

I always liked the Edge better, as did most people I assume since it outlasted Buzz 95.
I wasn't old enough to drink yet in those days. I think I remember DJ Mel... she was a bitch to me (if she's the right one) when I called in to request Bush Machinehead once.
Bitch.
