When asked about Allen’s touchdown and other trick plays that involved his linemen, Dantonio summed up the day, and the spring, with a sign-off worthy of any late-night television pitchman.

“If you’re athletic,” he said. “If you’re big, you’re fast and powerful, this is the place for you.”

The product he was hawking hasn’t gone through many dramatic changes since last fall – same steady quarterback, same intimidating defensive front – but there was still plenty to learn about what to expect from the 2015 and maybe "new and improved" Spartans.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State showed its opponents nothing by showing everything in its spring game Saturday.

The Spartans emptied out all the trick plays in front of a school-record spring-game crowd of 48,000. Center Jack Allen scored the only touchdown in the first while moon-lighting as a fullback. Shilique Calhoun, Lawrence Thomas and Montae Nicholson played both sides.

It seems nowadays whenever the Michigan State football team is in the news, it's just about always followed by something positive.

It was all good news yet again for the Spartans this past weekend, which featured the annual Green and White game. The White team was victorious, defeating the Green team 9-3, in what was — maybe not surprisingly — a defensive affair.

Michigan State. The Spartans may have a good option at wideout in DeAnthony Arnett, who had five catches in the spring game for 51 yards. It also was hard not to be impressed with QB Connor Cook, who showed poised and guile working behind a makeshift line in hitting 11 passes for 105 yards. And he had no picks. The running game has work to do with Jeremy Langford gone, as Madre London and Gerald Holmes were OK. The defensive front seven should be great again, led by lynchpin end Shilique Calhoun and linebacker Riley Bullough. Calhoun was described as “unblockable” by assistant Mark Snyder, while Bullough had a game-high seven tackles.

Oh, I don't doubt that he loves MSU and Coach D, I just thought it was weird he wasn't smiling like the other AAs were when they were getting honored.

Ringer's one of my all-time favorites. It feels like eons ago when he helped carry the team to 9 wins in 2008. I cannot believe how much different the program is now compared to back then.

EAST LANSING — There might not have been a player with a tougher task on his hands in Saturday's Green-White game at Spartan Stadium than backup quarterback Tyler O'Connor.

The redshirt junior had just one projected starting offensive lineman playing in front of him, and a defensive line coming at him on every play that featured three projected starting defensive linemen -- Lawrence Thomas, Malik McDowell and Joel Heath.

Further, both of the projected starting outside linebackers, Ed Davis and Darien Harris, opposed O'Connor.

The result was a defense that didn't need to blitz to get pressure, so that meant plenty of coverage on the back end -- including sophomore safety sensation Montae Nicholson -- and another long Green-White game for O'Connor that ended with a 9-3 loss.
