Michigan State football recruiting kicks back up with beginning of 'Spartan 300' events
EAST LANSING — The opening "Spartan 300" will signify a beginning of sorts for the Michigan State football recruiting cycle, as some of the top recruits in Michigan are expected on the MSU campus.
Coach Mark Dantonio and his team open practice on Saturday, and the prospects will have a front row seat from the meeting rooms, to the training tables, and then on the sidelines while the No. 6-ranked Spartans open camp.
"This is our way of showing prospects who we are,'' said Curtis Blackwell, the Spartans' director of college advancement and performance. "It's as close as you can get to being a Spartan, and it offers a personal association."
Donnie Corley and Lavert Hill, two highly coveted prospects in the 2016 class from Detroit's Martin Luther King High School, are expected to be among the dozes who visit the MSU campus this weekend.

Trieu: Where MSU stands with Peoples-Jones, other top '17 targets
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, Detroit Cass Tech: The state of Michigan's top prospect and one of the nation's best, Peoples-Jones is an athletic freak who became the first junior to win the Nike Football Ratings Championship at The Opening this summer. He has all of the nation's top programs recruiting him, but Michigan State continues to land Cass Tech prospects, something that was rarer just a few years back, and he is close friends with Spartan 2016 commit Demetric Vance. That gives the Spartans a fighting chance, but Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and others are all in the picture.

Recruiting: MSU impresses OLSM's Richard Bowens III
Over the years, Orchard Lake St. Mary's has produced a plethora of Division I talent, but the class of 2017 could be the best it has ever had. The Eaglets are loaded with talented players that are being recruited by major programs, and one of them is defensive back Richard Bowens III. I spoke with the 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect and got the latest details on his recruitment.
Last weekend, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio and his staff hosted a significant number of elite recruits on campus. The purpose was to build rapport with many of the best players in the Midwest for the next few years. Bowens talked about his time in East Lansing.
"The visit went great," he said. "They gave an amazing tour and took us around the entire place. We got to follow the players, and that gave me an inside look on what it would be like to be a Spartan and what life is like as a Spartan football player. I appreciated it. It was a great experience."

Recruiting: Michigan State after another Arizona QB
One of the top quarterback prospects in the nation for the class of 2017 is Chandler (Ariz.) Basha's Ryan Kelley.
The last few years Michigan State has been very active recruiting the state of Arizona and it has paid off. In 2015, the Spartans landed two outstanding prospects from the Copper State in quarterback Brian Lewerke of Phoenix and defensive end Cassius Peat of Tempe. A few weeks ago, MSU extended a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-2, 173-pound Kelley.
Kelley, a four-star prospect, has seen his stock take off this past spring and summer and he now holds an impressive list of scholarships from schools such as Arizona State, UCLA, Texas A&M, Washington and Nebraska. He is one of only four quarterbacks that MSU has offered for the class of 2017. Rivals.com ranks Kelley the No. 10 pro-style quarterback and No. 164 player in the nation overall.

Ohio RB big on MSU.
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2015/08/28/michigan-state-football-jarell-white/71299694/
As a junior last season, White rushed for more than 1,000 yards and found the end zone 30 times while helping lead LaSalle to a 14-1 record and the Division 2 state championship.
Despite sharing carries with Jeremy Larkin, a 2016 Cincinnati commitment, college coaches are in frequent contact with White. He holds scholarships from Illinois, Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio), Toledo and Ohio and is hearing from major programs from coast to coast. Rivals.com ranks White as a four-star recruit and the No. 9 running back in the class of 2017.
"I love Michigan State," White said. "It is a great school and I love the coaching staff. I am sure I will be talking with them more this fall and, hopefully, I will get a scholarship offer."

Harbaugh, Dantonio get thumbs-up from King star Ambry Thomas
Detroit – It's easy to see why Detroit King junior Ambry Thomas is getting offers from nearly all the major national powers, including defending national champion Ohio State and Michigan State.
Thomas, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back / receiver and four-star recruit, made outstanding plays on both sides of the ball in King's 12-10 season-opening win over defending Division 2 state champion Warren De La Salle Saturday afternoon in the Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State.

Top 2017 LB Josh Ross calls Jim Harbaugh 'a different character' and has Michigan, MSU high on list

Not to be forgotten, however, Ross also said that Michigan State has also made an impression on the rising four-star linebacker who is 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds.
"The whole Michigan State coaching staff, it's a great coaching staff," Ross said. "When I'm up there, I feel really comfortable. The coaches really relate to the kids. I like that about Michigan State."

Recruiting: MSU offers son of ex-Lions safety White
On Tuesday, college coaches could start contacting class of 2017 recruits in an official capacity and Michigan State has extended scholarships to several elite targets. One of the players MSU offered is Powell (Ohio) Olentangy Liberty's Brendon White.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound White is no stranger to big time college football. His father was former Ohio State Buckeye and former Detroit Lions safety William White.
MSU is the fifth team to offer White a full scholarship, joining Boston College, Illinois, Marshall and Toledo. A host of other BCS programs are keeping a close eye on him and could make a move now that MSU is involved. Rivals.com ranks White a three-star recruit and the No. 11 player in Ohio for the class of 2017. They also have him as the No. 22 Athlete recruit in the nation.

Re: tOfficial MSU Football Recruiting Thread: Class of 2017
Still kinda amazing to hear recruits talk about us like this.....
Big Ten Has Eyes Set On Neuqua Valley’s Isaiah Robertson
Big Ten Has Eyes Set On Neuqua Valley’s Isaiah Robertson
Since February, four Big Ten schools – Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Wisconsin – have extended scholarship offers to the Neuqua Valley junior wide receiver.
But even he admits the opportunity he was afforded last Saturday had a different vibe to it.
Taking Mark Dantonio’s staff up on their offer to take an unofficial visit to East Lansing, Mich. for a top-10 matchup between Oregon and Michigan State, Robertson came away impressed.
“The visit – overall – was really amazing,” he said. “The facilities were nice and new. Everything was big. Coaches were cool. Some people say, ‘college coaches are crazy, they’re all over the place.’ But the staff was really cool. It was hospitable. All the facilities, the practice field was nice, everything. It was just really a wonderful place.”
Without question, that resonated as well as the recruiting ground Dantonio and his staff are making in Illinois.
“Prior to all this, my friend (Fremd safety and Michigan State verbal commit) Kenney Lyke was telling me all about Michigan State and how it’s the No. 1 spot and how everybody’s coming up there and they’re going to do good things. So as soon as I got the opportunity to come up there, I wanted to jump up and see what it’s really like.”
“(Lyke) wasn’t lying in everything he said. So it was really important for me to get there and see the coaches and see the facilities. On Sept. 1, Michigan State – their coaches were the first to contact me. So it was something that I just really wanted to do.”

Recruiting: Four-star 2017 QB from Georgia has MSU ties
One of the top prospects on the Michigan State recruiting board for the class of 2017 is Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian quarterback Davis Mills. The 6-foot-3, 188-pound Mills is one of the top rated pro-style quarterbacks in the nation for the class of 2017.
Rivals.com ranks Mills a four-star recruit, the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the nation and the No. 52 player overall for the class of 2017. He holds a long list of scholarship offers that include Michigan State, Michigan, UCLA, Stanford and a host of others BCS programs.
Earlier this fall, Mills was able to travel to Michigan to check out both U-M and MSU. He was in Spartan Stadium for the big win over Oregon.

Recruiting: Michigan State offers Cincinnati DB Riep
The Michigan State staff is using the bye week to not only let the current players rest, but to evaluate and decide what prospects from the class of 2017 to offer. On Wednesday, coach Mark Dantonio decided that Cincinnati Colerain cornerback Amir Riep was a player the staff wants to see in Green and White.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Riep is viewed as one of the top recruits in Ohio for next year. Rivals.com rates Riep a three-star recruit and the No. 20 prospect in the state. In addition to MSU, Riep has already been offered a scholarship by Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and a host of MAC programs.
Riep announced via Twitter that he had received a scholarship from the Spartans: "Blessed to receive offer from michigan st. #gospartans!"
Riep was actually in East Lansing this past weekend on an unofficial recruiting visit.

Trieu: MSU target Reed, just 15, has huge upside
It was not so long ago that Muskegon sophomore Antwan Reed may have been envisioning himself meeting Tom Izzo and receiving an offer from the Spartans. At 6-foot-7, 230 pounds, Reed looked like a power forward when he transferred from North Muskegon last year.
The Big Reds staff took one look and knew he had the frame of a big-time football player.
Since then, Reed has dedicated himself to football. He now tips the scales at 280 pounds, and in a few short months has gone from ground zero to a stalwart on one of the best teams in the state and a rising name in recruiting circles. He has received offers from Tennessee and most recently, Michigan State, following his visit to East Lansing for the Indiana game.
"We were down, after the game, and we went to the locker room and talked to Coach Dantonio and said he would like to offer me," Reed said.
The scary part is, Reed is still young and developing. He just turned 15 and will graduate high school as a 17 year old.
