EAST LANSING – They called him “Little Dynamite,” but George Guerre’s Michigan State football legacy is plenty big.

The glory days of the 1950s and ‘60s? They probably don’t happen without something Guerre said in Biggie Munn’s debut season of 1947.

Munn told Sports Illustrated in a 1962 interview that he was “just about ready to quit football entirely” that season, after a 7-6 loss to Kentucky in which Guerre, his star runner, broke his leg. But Guerre gave Munn a strong endorsement the next week at a banquet in Flint, and Munn recalled to SI: “Well, I said to myself, if a coach can win this kind of respect from players, I’m staying with this game.”

Guerre died Thursday at his home in Bath of congestive heart failure. He was 91 years old, and still active in the MSU football program. As a 5-foot-5, 157-pound player, “Little Dynamite” led the Spartans in rushing, total offense, all-purpose yards and punting for three straight seasons from 1946-48.

And his Michigan State career came after a 1942 freshman season at the University of Michigan. Guerre served in the Army Air Corps in World War II from 1943-46, earning the rank of First Lieutenant and navigating B-17 missions over Italy and Africa.

The Flint Central product enrolled at Michigan State in the spring of 1946. He still holds the school record for yards per carry (6.75), and he finished with 1,721 and 11 touchdowns rushing.
