Why do people eat warm watermelon?

Neighbors invited us over for some watermelon tonight. Dude cuts it open and slices everyone a slab. I bite into it and it's warm, seedy and mushy, like it's been sitting out in the sun all day. I ended up taking a couple more bites then throwing it off the deck when nobody was looking. Why do people eat it like this? I need my watermelon to be seedless and rerigerated. Cool story bro.

That's a good question. Our neighborhood is very religious. Most of them don't even drink. So when they have get togethers it usually involves watermelon, ice cream or popsicles.

That was going to be my question.  At Saugatuck you get an eclectic group of people.  Our neighbors are Dutch.  I call them Dutch Deformed.   Anyway, when the wife and I build a fire and drink beer by it, they go inside and pray for us.  I have no problem with them praying for us either.  But yeah, if you're on that side of the state you're going to have some zealots aren't you?

Well assumptions are made.  If we're out in the yard doing things, they'll be out there with us from eating to just talking.  We bring a beer or mixed drink out, they always excuse themselves.  BTW, really good people, and frankly instead of saying shit to us, they handle it in that manner.  Pretty cool I guess, but never stops us from drinking.

Yeah I have family scattered around small towns in West Michigan. The post brought me bacj to When I was a kid at family gatherings and the watermelon was like the highlight of the day.
There can't be many places like this in the world. It has to be Zeeland or maybe Hudsonville, Byron Center or Jenison

It's pretty similar. They don't actually say anything to us when We're drinking that heathen beer but you can tell they disapprove just by the way they act.

Cascade/Ada. Although my wife has a friend who lives in Hudsonville and her husband won't even talk to us because we dared ordering drinks one night at Logan's Steakhouse. Blessing in disguise if you ask me, he's a Rush Limbaugh type who won't shut up about his hatred for the President.

Biochemically speaking, the warmer temperature helps improve flavor in fruit (or at least better than when fruit are pulled right out of the fridge). That might be why they left it out.

Also, there's much better fruit to eat than watermelon. Watermelon is messy and doesn't taste that good.

If you pick a fresh watermelon, it comes from outside in the summer where it's hot. If you get one from the store, it's not in a cooler and is at room temperature.

It seems like it should be a food consumed warm and not cold to me. Granted, I do put it in the fridge if there is extra after cutting it but watermelon seems like it's a naturally warm food rather than a cold food.

Alright Y2K, here's why people might like warm watermelon (or any other fruit for that matter): I grew up in rural India in the late '60s and '70s. Some of the best fruits and vegetables grew around my house. We didn't refrigerate any of it. Can you guess why? Because we didn't have a refrigerator, or even electricity. So we were used to eating things at room temperature (or warm), while they were still fresh. And you know what? They were the best damn fruits and veggies I ever had. (Even now, I prefer my fruits to be close to room temp.)

Why do we refrigerate things? To make them last longer. The fact that you like cold watermelon just means that you're used to having it cold. But the reality is that the cold temp just dulls your taste buds, so you're not getting the full joy of eating a tasty watermelon.

I'd also like to add that I find the taste of watermelon disgusting. Except watermelon-flavored Jolly Ranchers. Them's is tasty.

Lived with some chicks in a duplex on Stoddard summer term senior year. Went with them to a party at Waters Edge. After getting our fill of beer one of them decided we should take off with half a spiked watermelon that had sat there untouched. Walked it out of the place unnoticed and down to the river. Scooped the insides into beer cups, put the rind shell in the water and watched it set sail down the Red Cedar while eating melon out of the cups.
