As the Wolverines snapped the ball, Miller took off running from the edge, head down.

When he looked up, he saw that O'Neill running forward to pick up the ball, after a low snap had bounced off his hands.

Miller veered left and got to O'Neill just saw he was turning with the ball in his right hand. The hit he and two others delivered jarred the bar from O'Neill's hands.

Without bouncing, the ball popped right into the hands of Jalen Watts-Jackson, a redshirt freshman defensive back who had never touched the ball in a college football game before.

The twists were staggering. Cook and his receivers were threatening to break it open all game, but on their final drive, Cook was sacked by Willie Henry, then threw three straight incompletions and it appeared to be over. After so many heart-pounding triumphs – the Hail Mary to beat Wisconsin, the “Little Giants” trick play to beat Notre Dame, the comeback to beat Baylor in the Cotton Bowl – it’s apparent the Spartans aren’t beaten until it’s over, and it’s almost never over.

The Spartans should be reignited now, after overcoming injuries across their offensive line and in the secondary, where they started two freshmen, Grayson Miller and Khari Willis. Their defense rose up, led by Shilique Calhoun’s two sacks, and if it plays like that, Michigan State will remain smack in the middle of the playoff talk.

The Michigan-Michigan State game and its crazy finish giving the Spartans the stunning 27-23 victory also garnered stunning ratings for ESPN.

The game drew a 5.1 overnight, the best college football game in October ever (ESPN records go back to the 2000 season) and the second best of the season on all networks. Only the Ohio State game at Virginia Tech on Monday night of Labor Day weekend, according to ESPN.

The 28.3 overnight rating was the best ever Detroit market overnight for a college football game on the cable network. It also was WatchESPN’s second most-streamed regular season college football game ever.

Sharp: Harbaugh's complaints diminish instant classic

The Spartans and Wolverines put on a fabulous show, both appreciating the enormity of the stakes on both sides. This was a game that should have happily risen above the partisan pettiness that often reduces the respective fandom in this series to clownish stooges.

That's why it was disappointing that Harbaugh came across as a poor sport afterwards, crying about what he thought was officiating strongly tilted against the Wolverines. Instead, he should've pointed an accusatory finger at himself for calling a punt on the last play. Why even take the chance in that situation? Run the ball on fourth down and take a few more seconds off the clock, leaving Michigan State with no other option than attempt a Hail Mary on the final play.

But instead of blaming himself, Harbaugh blamed the referees.

It wasn't a good look.
