Jesus, I know shit about basketball. I didn't notice. I watch basketball like the 50 yard liners watch football. I just follow the ball and bitch when we get called for fouls.

It obviously worked. Two questions: why did he do it and how does that help?

I couldn't tell, with the five guys from the end of the bench playing the last five minutes and all.

I think he did it because it lets players get in more of a rhythm out there, offensively or defensively. Also, the fact that we weren't in foul trouble for once helped a shit ton. Can't really complain about the refs this game.

I can't read Izzo's mind but I think Ellis and Bess have struggled a fair share recently and not shown much improvement.

This is the part of the season where we should really develop a rotation and start hammering fools. #P4FinalFour

My favorite part of the game was when we won and when Costello made the slam dunk play

What's happened with Javon Bess? Izzo raved about him all last year. I know the talent level has increased dramatically, but Bess only gets cleanup minutes, if that.

He's still recovering from the foot injury, especially mentally. He'll be a beast next year.

If you look at it at one game, yeah I liked it because it's what he should be doing. But in the larger sense, no I didn't because for some reason to Izzo the Michigan game meant more than other games, which in my opinion are just as important.

We should have beaten Nebraska and Wisconsin and likely would have with the shortened bench from the Michigan game. I'd rather Izzo play our best lineups every game instead of just ones he deems important like the Michigan game or games in March.

Minutes vs. Wisconsin/Michigan:

Valentine 38/34
Costello 32/25
Harris 29/27
Forbes 28/34
Davis 19/16
McQuaid 22/16
Goins 14/21
Schilling 6/8

To be fair, if Michigan played any defense and we didn't blow them the fuck out, a lot of those players would not have been sitting on the bench in the what, last 6 minutes?

An argument was made that a shorter bench maybe would have won us the Wisconsin and Nebraska games.

The top 8 players played 181 minutes against Michigan (19 for everyone else).
The top 8 players played 188 minutes against Wisconsin (12 for everyone else).
The top 8 players played 196 minutes against Nebraska (4 for everyone else).

Michigan will always be a very important game. If you don't understand why, you simply don't get it.

Nice research, but it doesn't really tell the whole story.

In the Nebraska game, Bess got 20 minutes. He should not be getting anywhere close to 20 minutes unless Costello, Davis and Schilling are in huge foul trouble. Combined those 3 only had 1 foul in the Nebraska game, so there was no reason for Bess to be in there that much.

As for Wisconsin, I don't think McQuaid should start. McQuaid is solid, but that's not the best lineup. McQuaid shouldn't be out there for more than 20 minutes, either. 10-15 should be what he gets (more in blowouts or if someone fouls out obviously) but not 22 in a close game where no guard fouled out.

All games are important to win the Big Ten and get the best possible seed in March. There's no reason to play weird lineups against Nebraska when it means you could (and did) lose that game.
