Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball Empty Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball

Post by Guest 2016-09-27, 18:53

Are softball tournaments still a thing? I see a couple of web sites listing the remaining tourneys this fall in Michigan but am curious about how many there are in the summer.

Do you still get together with friends and play in weekend slow pitch tourneys?

Does anyone still play fast pitch? Hell even when I was near the end of my career in the early 90's fast pitch was about done.

Other than AAU or HS teams are there any women's tourneys?

Back when I was in my teens to my late 30's we had a group of guys that used to play 8-10 tournaments a year. Played inter mural
at MSU and leagues in my hometown in the summer. I just don't see much of that activity around any more and am wondering if
it's just in this area.

lol, funny stuff. We played IM seriously, at least the floor team. Our non-floor team was the "Bong Brothers" and we kept a bong as pictured below by the bench during games. The tournaments were usually up north and were a rolling 48 hour party interrupted by games.

I play in a league... But it's like super super not serious beer league. Like, if you're too good in this league then you're more of an outsider than the guy who strikes out. It's fun.

How is it fun if it is not competitive? I don't get that. It sounds legitimately boring. What is the point of doing something if it is not about winning?

Its competitive.... But no ones really all that good and at the end of the day your day isn't exactly ruined if you didn't win the beer league softball game

You say it's competitive but then say people don't really care about winning.

I don't know. I just think you need to go make some people run laps or something.

I mean, like, during the game everyone wants to win, of course. But if you don't then you chug a beer as punishment. If you do win then you chug a beer to celebrate.

I did that kind of league for a few years. Had to give it up in my early 30s when I rook a beer-induced dive rounding first and landed on my shoulder in a way that's not meant to be. It was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Well, you bring the beer yourself so the quantity and quality of the beer you drink is really as a result of the individuals success in life. So there's that.

Also I think the winning team gets a free pitcher at the bar. The losers don't. Strike that, I know the winning team does.

So, if somebody strikes out each time at bat, do you pull them aside after the game and say the following?

You know what's really fun turtleneck? I'm left handed, so when I come up to bat the whole field puts on the shift to the right as if I'm like fucking victor Martinez or something. The thing is, it's fucking slow pitch softball. So I just wait for an outside pitch then hit one down the third base line. It's an easy single or double every time. They don't stop though.

Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball Empty Re: Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball

Post by The Pantry 2016-09-27, 21:23

Played a little softball with high school friends until maybe 24.  Little was very little.   Most of them had been on the HS baseball team and I would fill in occasionally when someone couldn't make it to a game.  Had not been asked to play but went to watch a game one night.

One of the guys got ejected for mouthing off to an ump in the 5th inning and I suddenly got called into play from out of the stands.  Was wearing a team T-shirt and jeans and had already consumed a number of beers.  Got a single and was okay in LF until running to back up a play in CF.  Guy made the play but I could not stop running.  Was probably in right field before I could finally slow down to a stop without falling on my face.  The guys were cracking up.  Still get shit for it.
_____________

Had a new salesman come to the company I worked for about 20 years ago.  Wasn't the greatest with technical aspects of the business but was great with clients.  Super nice guy that did a lot of entertaining, but would get down-and-dirty fighting for change money.  Our clients respected him, as did most he worked with.

He didn't talk about it much but got inducted into the softball HOF a few years ago.  Got a pretty cool ring.  He passed last December at 79.

Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball Empty Re: Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball

Post by Death Roe 2016-09-27, 22:27

A dude was trying way too hard to beat a ground-out to me (2nd baseman), I threw it easily to first base. The girl playing first is about half my size, but a hell of an athlete. She makes the grab, then this dude jump/plows into her and hit her so hard, she dropped the ball and was out of the game.

Their umpire at 1B had the gall to call him safe after that play, which was obviously blatant interference. I went over to him and explained the rule, and he got attitude. I told him, "I don't think you're the team that should be mad since your guy deliberately ran into our first baseman." Their whole team came out of the dugout and decided to have words with us.

Then a few innings later, I tore my ACL. One of those fuckers actually clapped at me getting hurt. Serious Question for the age 20-40 set - Softball 502811600 We still won the game, so I just gave him a thumbs up as I was being helped off the field.
