Bernie Sanders knew the what the deal was when he decided to become a candidate for the nomination.
If I knew the road for him to win was very steep with the front loading of southern states where Democrats had zero chance to win a general election but gave Clinton a huge lead in Super Delegates and delegates.

Could Benie have won? I can't say that any of the plurality who voted for Trump or Gary Johnson because they didn't trust Clinton would have voted for Sanders. I suspect the Trump campaign would have painted Sanders as a feeble old socialist and the same folks who voted for Trump would have voted to keep 'Merica from becoming a socialist country..

People like to simplify things and make sweeping generalizations about the electorate because it's easier for them to process and makes them feel better.

While I do believe that Trump himself is a bigot, I don't believe that all or even most of his supporters are. Some certainly are, but many Trump supporters were simply anti-establishment or wedge issue voters like abortion, taxes, gun laws, immigration etc.

It's just like how people constantly rail against Democrats for wanting free hand outs, when in reality a lot of Democrats vote based on issues like climate change, LGBT rights etc.

Our electorate is much more complex than most people care to understand, including yourself clearly.

Edit: To answer the OP's question, Yes I believe Bernie Sanders would have won. He polled incredibly well with both Independents and rural America that turned out for Trump in the end. I think Bernie actually captured a lot of voters in areas that normally vote republican but identified with his anti-establishment, pro working class policies.

Inside Hillary Clinton’s Secret Takeover of the DNC - When I was asked to run the Democratic Party after the Russians hacked our emails, I stumbled onto a shocking truth about the Clinton campaign.

The Saturday morning after the convention in July, I called Gary Gensler, the chief financial officer of Hillary’s campaign. He wasted no words. He told me the Democratic Party was broke and $2 million in debt.

“What?” I screamed. “I am an officer of the party and they’ve been telling us everything is fine and they were raising money with no problems.”

That wasn’t true, he said. Officials from Hillary’s campaign had taken a look at the DNC’s books. Obama left the party $24 million in debt—$15 million in bank debt and more than $8 million owed to vendors after the 2012 campaign and had been paying that off very slowly. Obama’s campaign was not scheduled to pay it off until 2016.

Yet the states kept less than half of 1 percent of the $82 million they had amassed from the extravagant fund-raisers Hillary’s campaign was holding, just as Gary had described to me when he and I talked in August. When the Politico story described this arrangement as “essentially … money laundering” for the Clinton campaign, Hillary’s people were outraged at being accused of doing something shady. Bernie’s people were angry for their own reasons, saying this was part of a calculated strategy to throw the nomination to Hillary.

I wanted to believe Hillary, who made campaign finance reform part of her platform, but I had made this pledge to Bernie and did not want to disappoint him. I kept asking the party lawyers and the DNC staff to show me the agreements that the party had made for sharing the money they raised, but there was a lot of shuffling of feet and looking the other way.

When I got back from a vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, I at last found the document that described it all: the Joint Fund-Raising Agreement between the DNC, the Hillary Victory Fund, and Hillary for America.

The agreement—signed by Amy Dacey, the former CEO of the DNC, and Robby Mook with a copy to Marc Elias—specified that in exchange for raising money and investing in the DNC, Hillary would control the party’s finances, strategy, and all the money raised. Her campaign had the right of refusal of who would be the party communications director, and it would make final decisions on all the other staff. The DNC also was required to consult with the campaign about all other staffing, budgeting, data, analytics, and mailings.

I’m not saying anything with that really, just sort of pointing those two things out. The DNC front loaded the primaries and Clinton, as planned won on the strength of winning the nomination from states like Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas that she had less than a snowball chane in hell of winning in a general election. Add that to the super-delegate who were locked in to support her and no other candidate had a chance.

Sanders was swimming up stream from the get go and potential candidates like Micheal Bloomberg saw the set up and knew the built in headstart she engineered was a firewall so another candidate like Obama couldn't derail the Hillary Clinton candidacy again.
