The graffiti targeted Eastern's black community.

After committing 135 work days toward the investigation, Heighes said he hopes identifying the suspect will help build trust between the EMU community and the public safety unit.

"We take this very seriously. We want the community to know that we're going to follow through on everything that we possibly can," he said. "If we were going to let it go, we would have let it go many months ago. Obviously, we were very concerned that this happened in our community, because this is not our campus and not who we are."

EMU students also protested the incidents during a football game last fall inside Rynearson Stadium, when they entered the field of play after the Eagles' win over Wyoming.

MILLBURY (CBS) — The wife of a Millbury police officer is accused of faking a robbery and vandalizing the couple’s own home.

Police say on October 17 Maria Daly reported a burglary at the family home, saying jewelry and money had been stolen. She also reportedly said her house was tagged with graffiti that appeared to reference the Black Lives Matter movement.

According to Millbury Police Chief Donald Desorcy, investigators have determined the entire account was false.

“Something wasn’t quite right,” said Desorcy. “I think that was pretty obvious and as a result of that investigation, the officers did their due diligence and followed through with the investigation that we had.”

Police in Prince William County said Tuesday that a report of an attack on a 13-year-old girl who wore a headscarf in Woodbridge was false.

In a statement, police said a school resource officer and the department’s detectives found that the girl last week had “falsely reported” the incident, which they were investigating as a hate crime.

According to authorities, the girl said a man had cursed at her, grabbed her arm and showed a knife near Jato Court and Riverview Lane. She said the man was black and had also called her a terrorist.

Police said that “no altercation had occurred” and that the girl is expected to be charged with filing a false police report.

The student admitted to writing one of the notes, and also reported receiving at least one of the notes, officials said. So, she sent a threatening racist note to herself, sparking a scare across campus for weeks.
