Last night the SiL was here watching the end of the Tigers game with me. As usual I was regaling him with stories of becoming a fan in that magical summer of '67 and the even more special summer of '68. He tried to seem interested but I knew he was faking it.
After he left it dawned on me. That was 50 fucking years ago. It would have been like some old guy in 19 and 79 talking to me about the 1929-1930 seasons. No wonder he was bored.
TL:DR Every day I realize that I'm becoming more and more of a boring old fart.
This post is just to remind you that since their last series championship many of us have worked three plus decades as professionals and many have retired. So there’s that.
But at least we can say we’ve been alive for two championships. I still remember opening day in the bleachers in 84 after Morris had no hit the Sox. Great game and then the Windsor Ballet after.
4 months old but I was alive in October of 84

Not quite but 2 hit and Fulmer allows 1 run in the 1st and loses.

I don’t know, maybe Pitt sucks, but I’ve gone from 100 losses to 89-92 losses.

I don't know the stadiums any more....but I do recall that once upon a time all the stats were inflated a bit out there.

Looking at the last two games we didn’t give up any runs in the later innings. Weird.

1968 World Series. All 7 were day games. Last year there were no night games. 1969 was the expansion year and divisional playoffs started.DWags wrote:LooseGoose wrote:And now a story that will bore most of you to tears.

Back to '68. Was in 3rd grade at the time. My teacher, Ms. Madison, was mid/late 20's, brunette, and beautiful. Had an instant crush on her. She was cool, too. Tigers were down 3-1 in the series for game 5 at Tiger Stadium. Turned her radio on for all to listen to the broadcast. Did the same for games 6 & 7.
1984 Stopped to pick up a newspaper every morning before work to read recaps and stats in the shithouse. 35-5 was mind blowing.

Tigers are now 1-4. Runs scored 22. Runs against 24.
Hopefully things will start to balance out. With Gardenhire, I think they will.

Is this the worst era of Detroit pro sports teams? There was a stretch in the 70's that was pretty bad but I'm too young to remember that.

There is work left to be done to top the 1973-1980 era.
Lions 73-79 season - 41-60-1
Tigers 73-79 533-596
Pistons 73-79 256-252 with Lanier & Bing for most of that run - 2 HoFers - .500 record.
Wings 73-79 175-301-71 and they stunk for another 5 years.

Right in the wheelhouse of my youth, when I was paying most attention to the Detroit teams. Aside from ‘79, and individual stars, MSU wasn’t a whole lot of fun, either.

It all sucked.

Avila needs to be ruthless.
Cut Victor, Cut Zimmerman, Cut Martin - get rid of any older stop gaps and start playing the kids. Piss on the record.

You know that they still have to pay those contracts if they do that yeah?LooseGoose wrote:steveschneider wrote:I can’t see this team doing better than 110 losses.

Anyway, it’s a long ass season. Plenty of time for everybody. I think the plan would be that if any of those people get hot enough and a team gets desperate enough then the goal would be to trade them for literally anything. They can’t look put lipstick on that pig if you don’t.... shit I dunno give the pig a mirror? Is that a good relatable farm metaphor? Anyway if you don’t play them you can’t trade them. That’s the whole idea.

Completely aware that all baseball contracts are guaranteed, like the NBA.
Still would cut them to open up the playing time and start making decisions on the younger guys. No one is going to give you even a bag of balls for any of them.
Prepare to trade Iglesias, AWilson, and anyone else over 26 that you can move for value.

Just at Toledo -
McCann can't hit, Greiner is 26.
IF - Lugo 24, Eaves 25, Espinal 25
OF Castro & Stewart 25, Gerber 26
If they aren't ready now then they're not part of the rebuild. Let's find out or clear the dead wood out.
