Some of the praise being directed towards McCain after his death strikes me as deeply insincere, bordering on cynical. You always expect some of that, but being that McCain was one of Trump's favorite targets, I'd say it's pretty clear what is driving much of this outpouring of affection.

Who wants to discuss his voting record as a congressman vis a vis armed conflict? "Warrior for peace?" I'd say that tops out at half right.

I think people can feel what they want about him.

the racist, bigoted sexual predator and the deplorables, as evidenced in this thread, are more than welcome to demean an American hero, besmirch his character and shun his existence.

Others of us can see him as a conflicted person with many shortcomings and still admire is service to the country while enduring unspeakable torture.

I disagreed with about 90% of what he did. But one thing I look back on and respect immensely was his willingness to admit mistakes. He made a lot of them. He got caught up in a campaign finance scandal, he later works hard on campaign finance reform. He votes for the 2nd iraq war and toots that the US will find shitloads of WMDs, he later admits his mistake. He also drew a line between scaremongering and actual disagreement (although he rarely did much about it). He also would work across the isle sometimes. So yeah, he didn't do enough in my opinion, but he did a lot to maintain the persona of a statesman, and not a partisan jackass, like most of the party since the Gingrich revolution. As I said before, people are complicated. Go figure.

Personally I'm more fascinated by his miltary service than anything he's done as a politician. Always have a soft spot for guys like that. Very sad when you put it all together and makes you appreciate his military service. He sacrificed quite alot. And I appreciate that. If Clinton won the election I promise you I'd feel the same way. This ain't about the douche in the oval office with bad heels.
