Trustee Candidates
Who ya got and why?
I'm still researching but I'm leaning Scott and Miller. The other two seem a bit extreme. But again, still gathering info.
If you're blindly voting straight party either way you need not reply and state that you are voting that way. I'm looking for info about the candidates themselves.
I know Miller owns or owned a car dealership and his daughter was treated by Nassar, but he's not a burn it all down guy. Tebay seems more like a burn it all down type based on what I've read of her.
I like a lot of what I hear from both Miller and Scott in this: https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/2018/10/04/msu-board-trustees-candidates/1507928002/

Re: Trustee Candidates
Guys isn't the election on Tuesday?
This is a race that's important to all of us, and where you might actually be able to change someone's mind....crazy, right? Every other thread on this board is pure venting.
Travis?? I know you've looked into this.
Bob?? Any local insight?

Re: Trustee Candidates
Hey wbh. Unfortunately not this year, and you told me not to bother mentioning it. I’ve voted for republicans at times in the past, but I won’t even consider it this year. Every candidate that decides to put an r next to their name needs to be punished for coddling up to trump and refusing to check even the simplest ethics and corruption problems that are plain as day in front of everyone. They need to be shown that what they’ve done is not okay, and be shown on every level. Ultimately, I think that punishing every single one of them, even ones that have nothing to do with national politics, sends a stronger message and will do more in the end for the university and all of us than any single board of trustee member could ever do.
Sorry, I’m sure you wanted to hear more detailed stuff. And in future years I hope it’ll be worth the time to look into, but it just isn’t now.

Thanks Travis, and I get it....but have you read up on this Tebay? I just don't think she's fit for the position.

Not really at all tbh. Why not? I don’t have to pick two. I can just pick one if I want.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:Thanks Travis, and I get it....but have you read up on this Tebay? I just don't think she's fit for the position.

She's a single issue candidate - sexual assault/toxic campus culture/etc (she is a sexual assault victim). She displays a burn it to the ground type of attitude that is not sound or practical. The other candidates (at least the two I mentioned favoring - Miller and Scott) all have been very critical of Engler and the U/Board's handling of the situation and are saying the right things about how to affect positive change but they are much more responsible and practical with their approaches. Tebay is 30 years old which may have something to do with what seems to be a naive/impractical approach.
She wants Engler out even in the midst of the new Presidential search when Engler's on the clock and approaching the end of his tenure. I have been critical of Engler and some of the things he's done for sure but at this point in time this is a silly, irresponsible approach.
She does not seem like a bad person to me and her issues are important ones she just very much reeks of someone who is in over their head. Every talking point is basically I'm not that far from being a student and I was assaulted so I understand the toxic culture and I'm gonna change it.
My .02 based on what I have read. She's actually the least appealing of the 4 candidates to me.

Re: Trustee Candidates
Miller and maybe Scott or Campbell. If Tebay is elected, I'm done at MSU when the last kid is done. It will be a shit show if those extremists get in. I feal anyone who pulls the straight ticket lever. They aren't punishing just the republicans, they're also neglecting to look at a third party type candidate. Take the time to go through each candidate at every position. If it's a democrat you want, keep checking the box, but maybe research the Libertarians or whatever. There are some asshole candidates that maybe you just want to skip that particular race. But to blindly give a crazy democrat your vote is as bad as voting for a racist pig like Trump in my opinion.

And speaking of....I don't know why I was under the impression the 2 Rs and 2 Ds were the only ones listed on the ballot. I mean I've voted in these things before.

Miller and Scott.
Put some extremist on the BOT and they'll obstruct everything including screwing up the presidential search / confirmation.

Do you mean Miller and Brianna Scott GRR? There is no Baker on the ballot. Scott is the other D.

I'm voting straight ticket for the first time I remember. I hate doing it. I always looked at candidates' positions and doing research on who to vote for, especially downticket races. This is the wrong year for anyone to be an R if they want my vote. The liar-in-chief has destroyed the GOP.

No, unfortunately. There are two who are not seeking re-election. Mitch Lyons and Brian Breslin.

Re: Trustee Candidates
My source got back to me. All she said was "Miller, Scott".
Tebay seems like a good person, I like her views on the Nassar situation, the fall out, etc - just not sure that she's ready. She does seem like a one issue candidate.

That's how I voted.
I actually emailed the Miller campaign with some questions. He wrote me back and I was satisfied with his responses.

Looks like Scott and Tebay and it wasn't super close.

Re: Trustee Candidates
I voted for Dutch and Miller. I feel that Engler has done a decent job in his role. Maybe a bit too callous in a few instances but he stood up for the university when a lot of people were trying to bury it. Now we have someone who wants Engler out right now and the other seems to be ok with him in place for now. It'll be interesting to see how these two interact with Turd Ferguson and the rest of the clown show.

I don't see the board as a place for partisan politics but I'm not sure how they see themselves. I believe it is now 6-2 in favor of the Ds.

she's a bit of a single issue extremist, it seems - so maybe her extremism to one side will balance out the calloused, seemingly disinterested extremism on the other side.DWags wrote:I'm worried about Tebay. So there I said it.

Honestly, it’s a good point.
for instance, I don't take too many things seriously. My wife pays bills, puts money toward savings, towards tuition, totally controls the household budget and everything that is involved. I don't even know where we bank at.
however, she would have no idea where the lawnmower is stored or how/where to put gas/oil in it, how to find the ladder that I use to clean out the gutters, she wouldn't know the circular saw from the jigsaw, etc.
but we work because we play to our strengths and communicate effectively. So, basically, the MSU Board of Trustees needs to be more like my house.
wait.. - I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
nevermind.
