Truth is he did take a job no one wanted, and he was brought in to get the settlement done and as the article points out, make sure we didn't lose State funding. He did both of those things.

However, in addition to causing further embarrassment and damage to our reputation, insiders are also saying that he made some major missteps behind the scenes, most notably in his insistence on hiring his buddy Bob Young as our top lawyer. Young was apparently on tenuous ground with his existing firm and he really made some fuck ups in negotiations with the insurance carriers that could harm us. In addition, Engler signed him to a 3 year deal, despite Engler's tenure being unknown but much shorter than 3 years.

So while he deserves some credit, I don't want to go overboard in that regard either. Apparently he did some damage aside from his bullying, asinine remarks and beahviour.

I had a parent that used to work for the state and he’d pretty much complain about almost exactly the same type of dealings you just wrote about. He’d talk about all the friends Engler would apoint and all the damage they did. He couldn’t stand John Engler in the 90s. I was in college and a complete party animal so I wasn’t really paying attention back then but I do remember him getting worked up at the dinner table whenever Engler came up.
