I spend a lot of time out on trails. Never saw a snake all spring, summer or fall until last Friday. Then in three days I saw four snakes. Weird.

Depending on where you live, it was most likely a cicada killer wasp. They are scary looking are about an inch and a half long and are often confused with the "murder hornet." They are not aggressive - the males lack a stinger, the females have a stinger but rarely sting humans. They are common in the eastern US, I have seen at least a dozen this summer.

Cicada killer wasps have arrived. Don't confuse them for murder hornets.
