Re: Aunt Becky going to the Big House
That's fair, sending her to the other big house would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Apparently fighting this in the media didn't work out so well for her.

Sounds like 2 months for her, 5 months for her husband.
Her spoiled brat kids will be having a shit ton of parties at their place for the next 2 months

Stupid.
She gets a $150,000 fine and 2 months? What's the rationale behind that?
I'd fine her the equivalent of a 4 year scholarship + housing + dining + etc. (for both of her kids). Figure out how to give it to someone who really deserves (or would value) an education at USC.

Huffman got 14 days & a $30k fine, so this seems proportional at least. Shoulda took the deal.

She got off easy also.
Make her pay for full ride scholarships and expenses too.

Re: Aunt Becky going to the Big House
Here's my issue. Who benefits from this? Is society made safer by these people having a few of the worst months of their lives? Our society is obsessed with punishment and jail, but it's not working. We're not more law abiding than other countries. Have you heard lots of stories of people going to jail/prison and coming out better people? I sure haven't.
Just fine them silly dollars and put the money to good use.

But then what happens to our fantasy of aunt Becky late at night, in her orange jump suit, walking up to the hard knock tough alpha female prisoner, and stripping down out of them and doing untold stuff to each other?

Then you have two justice systems. The rich get to pay their way out of whatever they fuck up while the only recourse for poor people is jail because they have no money for excessive fines.
Jail isn't just for safety. It's a deterrent. And a pretty good one considering how much rich people are willing to pay lawyers trying to stay out. These two bozos probably spent at least $500k for lawyers on top of the $500k in fines they got. They could've taken the Huffman deal & got off a lot easier.
The rehabilitative qualities of our prison system vs. other countries is a different debate of course.

The answer, of course, is that we should reform both sides, not neither.Heat Miser wrote:Cameron wrote:Here's my issue. Who benefits from this? Agreed, but I don't think the reform starts with Aunt Becky.

I kind of agree, but where is this talk when an African American is locked away for longer sentences for similar non violent crimes? I also thought it was ridiculous those guys for the shoe companies got put away when the FBI probed that NCAA scandal.

I thought the FBI probing the NCAA period was ridiculous. We all know the NCAA is corrupt as fuck, but doesn't the FBI have better things to do? There are real terrorists and shit out there...
