Which is what the NCAA and their TV partner wanted. There was no reason to put MSU and scum in the same bracket to play each over a 6th time. Minnesota or Wisconsin could have been in the bracket.

The people putting the bracket together want ratings and they know how difficult it is to beat any opponent five times in a row.

Don't know if MSU hockey sees Michigan as a rivalry game but they are in the tournament playing against an instate team, wouldn't think they will have any issues gaining focus.

I don’t think that college hockey is as ratings obsessed as you’re describing. This isn’t football or basketball.

I honestly think they just rank the teams 1-16 and let the chips fall where they may. They don’t make adjustments to that that they probably should make

I think ratings are considered when making matchups in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I doubt that's a big consideration for hockey.

But, the brackets were manipulated for attendance (and hosting considerations).

UMASS had to be in Springfield (which they fit into UMASS' seed).
Omaha #11 had to be in Sioux Falls (so they flipped with #10 Michigan), and they couldn't play North Dakota in the first round (so North Dakota got moved).

Then they flipped North Dakota vs. Michigan (to our regional) and Cornell vs. Maine to Springfield for attendance.

Basically our regional "should" have been

4. Michigan State
5. Maine
12. Cornell
13. Western Michigan

At this point, you can get beat by any team (and we almost found that out yesterday). A win over Michigan will be sweeter.

Would have loved to make it to the Frozen Four, but I didn't expect to make it past the next game if we did move on. Hard to beat any team that many times - add in an in-state rivalry and a spot in the Frozen Four and it becomes even harder. MSU is a fairly young team, and they just got valuable playoff experience - experience that Michigan already had. We'll be back. As much as it sucks to lose to our rivals, we still had a hell of a season. Big Ten regular season and tourney champs is nothing to sneeze at. Program has come a long way in a short time - we've got a lot to feel good about.

They are more open to keeping a draftee in college to develop than start putting them on a team with older players.
