Used to be that you could pick up great deals on plasmas. I don't know if that is still true but I can tell you that the 60" LG plasma in my family room is the best TV in the house.

Supposedly open box discount. I haven't seen the tv or asked my sister. Pretty sure that's what my parents told me. Granted that was after Disney and a couple scotches in on my bday.

Check out Deadspin.com. Once a week they have a feature on cool items that are priced nicely.

They had some 4k, curved TV's for great prices. Not sure if any are left, but even the 70 inch TV's were less than 2 grand. If you only want a 50, you can get it for less than $800, if any are left. It's always internet deals that they highlight.

I have no idea what 4k is, or what curved does for me, but apparently that's where it's all going.

Woah, sorry.  Didn't know about that detail.  Hope everything is OK (ie: relatively minor, obv) I won't bring it up again.  I have a cousin (senior in HS and on the varsity hoops team now) who had two open heart surgeries when she was less than a week old.  Hang in there man.

Plasmas are great. Blacks are very black which makes a huge difference for me.

The only thing you have to worry about is glare. While they've addressed pretty much all of the issues that plasmas had when they first came out (burn in, heat, etc.), they are still prone to glare so if you're putting it in a room that gets a lot of sun, it might not be the best solution. Otherwise, I'd buy another plasma in a heartbeat.

Yup...

Are you guys pretty much just telling me to go find "big" and "cheap" and buy it cuz "good enough"? that is all I really need to know... whether or not I'm going to get one home and set it up only to see awesome LSD trailers shooting out of everything on the screen that is moving (not that I would, um, know what that looked like, or something).

Definitely - decide what size you want and check Slickdeals daily and you'll get a decent deal. You can get a decent 55" LG or similar for around $450-500 - a 60" will be pushing $700. Avoid Smart shit - you can get all of that through sticks, video game systems etc. If you need motivation, put your dying TV on Craigslist and some student or Mexican will give you $100 for it. When the dude leaves head straight to Walmart, Best Buy etc.

Sams usually has some decent Vizios/Samsungs in that area. Check the orange tag to see how much it was/is and look it up on your phone for a couple minutes

Seems a lot of people are just throwing out prices, but you should decide if you want 4K or not first. Content in 4K is kind of hit or miss (and mostly only through Netflix or Amazon), but if you figure you'll have the TV for 4-5 years or more, it might be an investment worth doing. For a 55" I think you're probably looking at $1200 and up, but there are some 50" TVs that are 4K for under $800.
