Windsor: Izzo's player development enhances skills, mind

FULLERTON, Calif. – Deyonta Davis got bullied in the first half against Providence Sunday night. What he did in the second half is a tantalizing thought for Michigan State's coaching staff.

This should be a tantalizing thought for you, too. The freshman forward dropped in 12 points and vacuumed six rebounds in the Spartans' win over the Friars. Yet it was his feistiness on the defensive end that kept him on the court at the end of the game.

That Davis got the nod after getting worked in the first half tells us a lot about his competitiveness. It should also remind us about this overlooked fact: Tom Izzo's players get better.

We gave him hell from behind the Louisville bench at the Carrier Dome elite 8 game last year.

Izzo wants the kids to bury their head in the sand or what? The e-mail "Izzo" sends out hopefully won't deter them too much.

Before flying to an AAU tournament the summer before his junior year in high school, Denzel Valentine asked Michigan State coach Tom Izzo what else he needed to do to earn a scholarship offer.

Izzo's response was blunt. He wouldn't promise a scholarship until Valentine proved his outside shooting wasn't a liability.
