Re: Hey, HM, guess what? I downloaded Windows 10!
There should be an icon in the lower right corner. I've heard that the release is being done in waves. You have up to 1 year from release to upgrade, or maybe longer with 8. Someone who has read more than headlines can probably fill in more. Its 'free' and you can get it. When it actually is installed, I'm not sure.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:InTenSity wrote:

As long as the computer running Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 isn't joined to a domain then the upgrade icon should appear in the system tray (lower right corner). You may have to click the "Show Hidden Icons" upward triangle at the left of the system tray to see the Window 10 reservation Icon. Open the icon and reserve a copy to upgrade to Windows 10. I personally haven't taken it any further than that for a number of reasons.

I have seen some good reports about the upgrade going smoothly. Having said that, I would do nothing without backing up everything that is important to you onto a USB drive.
Personally, I am going to wait about six weeks before I do it.

Re: Hey, HM, guess what? I downloaded Windows 10!
Installed on 3 laptops (2 x W8 - 4GB RAM, 1 x W7 - 2GB RAM, all 64 bit) yesterday without issue. Didn't even bother to back them up first. Will probably do my desktop (W7 - 6GB RAM - 64 bit) this weekend after full backup (critical work/porn machine). Took about 2 hours for each.
You can proceed to the front of the upgrade line here.
FYI...you can roll back the upgrade if you don't like it/run into issues. If you do like it, be sure to eventually run disk cleanup & recover ~20GB of disk space by removing the old Windows version.
EDIT: fuck it. I'm gonna upgrade the desktop now.

Re: Hey, HM, guess what? I downloaded Windows 10!
Not that I wouldn't back up everything, but is it supposed to keep all your info, files, etc., or is it a clean wipe like when you would install new versions of Windows in the past? I don't really read up on this stuff, but I guess it never occurred to me that they might be following the Android/iOS model where everything stays there (at least in theory).Floyd Robertson wrote:Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:It's free right? This is how we talk about SCum now. In code, so as not to get you too wound up. For example, "10" = "HARBAUGH!!!" & "Windows" = "SCum".

The only thing I'm hesitant about is the new browser. I know I don't have to use it.

Did you use IE before? If so.... If not, WTF cares. Continue on with Chrome/FF as before.

No I stopped using ie right when ff came out. I use chrome mainly now. I love adblock. It's probably my favorite thing ever.

Hmmm, so the day after they release Windows 10, I "coincidentally" get my first Blue Screen Of Death on my work laptop in over 4 years of owning this machine a few minutes ago. Â And interestingly, the little windows icon on the task bar that had been there for the last several weeks about Windows 10, is not there any more. Â It all seems a bit fishy.

I just downloaded the new i9e45-T software that's compatible with my whiz-bang floopytubes. It'll improve the reception of my 45h90ee gigawatt amplitude modifier which will make my life so much more simple.

W10 is having trouble dealing with my old Nvidia GT430 HDMI graphics card paired with a Vizio 27" TV as a monitor. Can't say I'm surprised.

New driver from Nvidia & we're good to go.
I don't like that MS installed a bunch of apps that cannot (as far as I can tell) be uninstalled (just like Apple & Google).

Scroll thru 'All Apps' on the Start menu. There's a lot. I will say the new calculator is pretty sweet, but I have no use for "Groove Music". Now to get my mic working so I can test Cortana.
