Anyway, since Illinois isn't on the hook for the $3.1M of Beckman's contract, paying WMU the $800K to buy out Fleck's contract wouldn't be a reach. (If Fleck leaves after 30 NOV 15.)

The rest of the MAC might breath again knowing giving a coach an $800K/yr didn't stop him from jumping to a power 5 conference for a larger contract.

With all the schools competing for available coaches this year and the messed up AD situation at IL that's probably a smart move. Cubit is a quality coach, wants the job, knows the team and recruits, etc....the smartest, safest move they had available.

Chancellor Phyllis Wise resigned August 6 and they currently have an interim chancellor

AD Thomas was fired November 9.

Getting Cubit to stay with a 2 year deal gives the unversity time to hire others like a new chancellor and a new AD. Cubit is 62 or 63 and they probably had coaching search people tell them no candidate they might want was going to take a job at a school with an interim chancellor and an interim AD.

Iron laws of football for rising coaches and new coaches just breaking into the head coaching ranks: If you want your career to end, go to Illinois. If you want your career to end before it starts, go to Eastern Michigan.

As somebody said on Twitter, that's effectively a one-year deal for Cubit, because "nobody coaches in the final year of their contract." Not so sure about that last, but a short contract sure gives Illinois a fixed, manageable cost if they don't like the way things are going next year.

If Illinois hires their next permanent chancellor and that person has a hand in hiring the new AD it's probably going to take 18 months minimum and that would allow the new AD.

You and turtleneck are correct about Illinois being the Eastern Michigan of the Big Ten. If they do appear to be getting better we find out they've cheated. (Mike White)

I'm happy for Bill Cubit. Took him 30 years to get his first D1 job at WMU and 40 years to be a Power 5 HC.

Two potential candidates who are sitting athletic directors were contacted through their university email addresses, sources said, which is against the typical protocol of hiring searches and could jeopardize an AD's current position.

Illinois has absolutely no idea how to administer sports

Illinois is such a shit show. Even its flagship university is screwed up. How does that even happen? Protocol in this case seems obvious.

New ADs first day in the job, Bill Cubit fired. Seems like a great move to fire your HC in March, even if he isn't the long term answer. Then again, there is no such thing in Campaign-Urbana.

Stupid move. Glad it's them and not us.

That state is completely melting down right now. I highly doubt this has anything to do with budgets, but there are a lot of rumors going around that some public four years in Illinois might be closing. Obviously that does not include UI Urbana, but things are not good anywhere in Illinois. The accrediting body responsible for Illinois sent letters to 60 public universities and colleges in Illinois telling them if they cannot put together a plan detailing where they would place their students in the event of closure, they would face losing their accreditation.

MSU can be compared to Wisconsin because both schools have stadiums that seat at least 30,000 fewer fans for home games which means millions less in annual revenue from ticket sales. Could have included PSU in the same statement because Beaver Stadium seats 107,000.

The new AD is going to be pouring money into football with coaches' salaries. Memorial Stadium seats just 62,900 and has no seats in the north end zone.

I don't think the acting AD knew his job would be so short when he gave Cubit a 2 year deal. Things change.

Dennis Dodd called Cubit a 62-year-old retread. What little I know of Lovie Smith, I like, but he's just 5 years younger than Cubit and, at this stage of his career, also a retread. Smith is at best a stopgap move.

Started coaching college football at Tulsa in 1883 after 3 seasons of HS coaching
Was a defensive position coach from '83 to '95 with Tulsa, Wisky, ASU, UK, UT and Ohio State

DC for Rams from '01-'03
HC with the Bears '04-'12 seasons
HC Tampa Bay '14-'15 seasons

I have to believe there was some serious boo$ter influence at work if new AD and former Illini player Whitford walked into his new office and fired his football coach in about the same amount of time it takes to learn where to get a cup of coffee and hang your coat.
