Recruiting: Ohio LB 'loves the way' Michigan State coaches

Michigan State might have the best linebacking corps in the Big Ten this fall, and the staff already is looking to the class of 2018 to replenish the cupboard.

Chris Oats of Cincinnati Winton Woods is a Plan A recruit for coach Mark Dantonio and the staff. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder already holds a Spartan scholarship offer.

"I've been there, like, three times and I have a really good relationship with coach Dantonio and coach (Harlon) Barnett. I like the defense they run; it is the same defense my team runs. I love the way they coach."

But the Spartans are not the only elite program involved in his recruitment. Ohio State and Oklahoma also have offered Oats.

Michigan State already is focused on linebacker prospect Dallas Gant of Toledo St. John’s for its recruiting class of 2018. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder already has an impressive list of scholarship offers that includes the Spartans, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Rivals.com ranks Gant as the No. 13 outside linebacker in the nation for 2018. He's also considered the No. 9 player in Ohio and the No. 229 player in the nation.

“I have been up to Michigan State multiple times,” Gant said. “They have great people. They are a great program and a great school. I have a good relationship with all of the coaches from there, as well.”

In-state QB recruit says it's 'always great' being at Michigan State

One of the top 2018 football prospects in the state of Michigan is Rockford quarterback Jason Whittaker. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder already has scholarship offers on the table and is poised to add more. He was in East Lansing for the Wisconsin game this past weekend, and I was able to get some details on his recruitment.

"As far as State goes, I always love visiting, not only as a fan, but as a school I am interested in," he said. "There were a lot of recruits there, which made it pretty hectic, but I still got a chance to talk with coach (Brad) Salem, the QB coach. Even though the game didn't go as planned, it's always great being around the Green and White."

Recruiting: Traverse City West TE Ryan Hayes checks out MSU

One of the class of 2018 players that was on campus this past weekend was Ryan Hayes of Traverse City West High School. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound prospect is getting a lot of recruiting interest and recently picked up his first scholarship offer.

Hayes has been busy this fall visiting college campuses and talked about the schools has been in contact with.

“I have had game visits to Notre Dame, Central Michigan and Michigan State," Hayes said. "I have a visit scheduled for Northwestern this Saturday. Purdue, Western Michigan and Louisville have also been in contact.”
