SI's Player of the Year Projections: The 2017-18 Season's Top 10 Candidates
TIER 1: THE FAVORITES
1. Miles Bridges, Michigan State
The basics: 6' 7", 225 pounds, combo forward, sophomore
Projected raw statistics: 17.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 1.8 apg
Projected advanced statistics: 114.1 offensive rating, 26% usage
When Bridges elected last spring to return to East Lansing for his sophomore season, he at once reshuffled 2017 NBA draft lottery boards and put Michigan State on the short list of 2018 Final Four contenders. After making good on the expectations surrounding his status as the nation’s No. 10 recruit last season, Bridges will be the centerpiece of a stellar sophomore class (along with guard Cassius Winston, wing Joshua Langford and center Nick Ward) capable of bringing Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo his second national title. He scores efficiently from both sides of the arc, rebounds his position well and should appear on SportsCenter’s Top 10 at least a few times for a jaw-dropping dunk or a forceful rejection. The narrative allure of Bridges’s choice to buck the one-and-done path will help his cause.

Niyo: Another ‘lightning strike’ hits MSU with Jaren Jackson
Jackson has added nearly 20 pounds to bulk up to what he feels is an ideal weight — in the 240-245 range — for his freshman year. That’ll suit him well once the regular season starts next month and Jackson, with a stretch-four skill set and a 7-foot-4 wingspan, is called on to do a little bit of everything, whether it’s spacing the floor or crashing the boards.
“I’m confident in my ability to do a lot of different things,” Jackson said. “Whatever Coach wants, I got it.”
He’s got plenty of company, too. This might be Izzo’s most talented team. It’s also one of the biggest, so Jackson’s newfound strength is getting tested daily in practice against the likes of Nick Ward, Gavin Schilling and fellow freshman Xavier Tillman. And when he doesn’t measure up, or when he gets caught floating on the perimeter too much — “I’m 6-11 and sometimes that slips my mind for a second, surprisingly,” he said — he hears about it from Izzo and the rest of the coaching staff.

Irrational exuberance.....
Couch: This is Tom Izzo's most gifted Michigan State basketball team, without question
Couch: This is Tom Izzo's most gifted Michigan State basketball team, without question
The 1999 and 2000 teams had good talent, great veteran guards and phenomenal hunger and leadership. They didn’t have Bridges or Jackson. The 2005 Final Four team wasn’t in this class in terms of talent. Nor was the ’09 group. Same for the 2010 team, though that was one of Izzo’s best shots at a second national title because it was a weak Final Four that year.
The 2015 team, which made an improbable run through the East Region …
“This team right now would blow that team out of the water,” said redshirt junior Kenny Goins, a freshman on that team. “I’ve got mad respect for Travis Trice, Branden Dawson, Denzel Valentine, Bryn Forbes, all of those guys, Matt Costello. We had talent on that team. But to look around where we are now compared to how we were October of my freshman year, it’s night and day difference.”

MSU bigs will battle 'for their lives’ in rotation
With Carter and Schilling both healthy and the arrival of freshmen 6-11 Jaren Jackson Jr. and 6-8 Xavier Tillman as well as 6-11 sophomore transfer Braden Burke, the practice intensity has picked up as each knows they have to prove they belong on the floor come game time.
“We go a lot harder,” Ward said. “It makes everybody better at the end of the day. We have seven, eight bigs, so this is going to make us better at the end of the day and makes us go harder. It’s a lot more competitive. It’s a lot harder to score. A lot more rebounds. Everything’s much more intense because of the number of bigs we have.”

MSU hoops No. 2 in coaches poll; UM, Oakland get votes
The stakes might just have been raised in the Michigan State men’s basketball team’s showdown with Duke next month.
The Spartans are No. 2 in the preseason coaches poll, released Thursday, trailing only the top-ranked Blue Devils. Michigan State and Duke meet Nov. 14 in the Champions Classic in Chicago, potentially setting up a showdown between No. 1 and No. 2.
Michigan and Oakland are unranked, but both received votes in the poll, collecting 13 and 19 points, respectively.

Weird thing - not sure if this is just a thing they will change later but right now we have 2 January in conference games (IU and Wisconsin) scheduled for Friday nights. There is rarely if ever Friday night major conference hoops games. As a degenerate gambler who has placed way too many wagers on the Iona Gaels, I know this to be fact. Something change this year?

Is this real information or is it fake?
It would take minimal intelligence to determine that.

Considering you cannot discern real from fake information, should you be commenting on the intelligence of others? Or can you discern, but choose to pass along fake information anyway? Honestly, I'm rooting for the former rather than the latter.
