Re: Game of Thrones Season 7 - WAR IS COMING
I don't know, he's kind of been on her side since Day 1. Yes, he had Jorah spying on her, but he also had spoken positively of her early on. Then he gives up his life and power in Kings Landing, risks his life by smuggling out Tyrion, then convinces Tyrion that she is a leader that they must go see and try to work with. That would be an insanely long and complex rouse.MSU addict wrote:Overthinking #2
I am becoming convinced Varys is not on Dany's side. He goes to Meereen last season, Dany's fleet gets burned. (Why would they burn her ships - they want her gone)
He is in on the Dany's takeover plans and somehow Euron mystically knows exactly where their fleet is, both on the way to Dorne and at Casterly Rock.
The easy guess is that he is still working for the Lannisters. My money is that he sees himself on the Iron Throne, which is exactly why he repeatedly claims he wants no part of it.
Little Finger was talking to Varys when he said: “Chaos isn’t a pit, chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but they refuse. They cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.” I think Varys took those words to heart.
Also remember his conversation with Melisandre last episode Varys says "Give us common folk one taste of power, we're like the lion who tasted man. Nothing is ever so sweet again."
I also wholeheartedly believe him when he says he doesn't want to sit on the Iron Throne. He's a man that works in the shadows. He is not going to want the exposure that the spotlight brings. Yes, he wants power, but often the greatest power is wielded by those behind the scenes. Especially those that possess/obtain information.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that no one is "sitting on the iron throne" at the end of 9 episodes.

Watch the episode where Tyrion escapes again. I am not sure that Varys planned to go with Tyrion. He puts Tyrion on the ship and begins to walk away. He decides to get on the ship when it is clear they have found the Tywin dead.
The whole thing did not go as planned - killing Shae and his father were not part of the plan.

One suspension of disbelief thing- Jaime was riding that horse through a couple of inches of water, then the dragon almost burns him, bronn tackles him, and he's falling into a 100 feet deep lake. That's one hell of a drop off.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 7 - WAR IS COMING
Watching S1 again - it's fucking depressing watching Ned get systematically taken out. He was a solid dude trying to do the right/smart thing always. Watching Varys/LittlePed manipulate over each other given what we know now is completely old.
Tears of Lys, Mountain matching up against Jon Arryn's understudy - seems Cersei was plotting all along. Definitely missed 90% of this shit the first time around.
Also I'm gonna go ahead and proclaim that the hottest chick ever in the series was the whore that tried to teach Dany how to fuck Drago. Her tits obviously are not as good as "Ros" but man, she is sexy as fuck.

Ok so really stupid question as I rewatch S1. When the hole King Robert thing dying went down, it seems Renly was smart enough to GTFO. Little Pedo Finger stabs Ned in the back - because he didn't think Stannis was fit to sit on the Throne? Or were there more reasons?
Also, regarding the boar. Obv Lancel was pushing wine onto King Robert, but Cersei claims this later as her doing iirc. How in the fuck is she going to set up a pig to kill him? Just by getting him blanch level drunk?

Re: Game of Thrones Season 7 - WAR IS COMING
In the book it was super strong wine. So he tried to drink as much as he normally does which was a bad idea.
Littlefinger stabbed Ned in the back because Ned was a dipshit who was trying to do the right thing in the wrong place. At the time little finger viewed protecting the lannisters secrets as more advantageous than allowing Ned to out them- which certainly doesn't mean that it auto puts stannis on the throne, the lannisters aren't going to be like "oh, okay, you got us. We're out." They'll be like "neds a dipshit liar and we're going to kill him." So, instead of siding with the dipshit doomed man, little finger sided with the people that would stay in power for the immediate future.

No book spoilers dammit.
This shit is fucked up. Stark knew what was coming but didn't take enough steps to protect himself. Also tried way too hard to do what was right in the face of obvious danger.

Pretty much. Ned Stark can be wrapped up by just saying "he was just too fucking good."
I actually thought about that with regard to Jon the other day. Is he following that same path? After thinking about it, no. Would Ned have fucked that wildling in the cave? Nah. Ned wouldn't have even made it that far undercover. Would he be anywhere other than at the nights watch if in Jons shoes? Again, nah. He'd have stayed there doing nothing because of a vow.

Truth. I also watched Jon and Sam take the night's watch oath tonight. And it struck me that Jon broke that shit when it mattered and when it was convenient. Same for Sam.

First off remember Little Lingers ultimate goal - to sit on the iron throne and that chaos is the ladder.
I do not think that Jon actually violates his oath:
His oath ended with his death (which was at his post). So unless he re-ups I say he is good.
I do not think that Jon actually violates his oath:
He never married or fathered children as Sam later points out."Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come."

Ok really good episode again.
Super slick move by Pedo Finger setting up the distrust between the siblings.
Hilarious conversation between Tyrion and Varys. "So what did it say?"

I'm running on it was the note that Cersei forced her to write in season 1 saying Ned was a traitor and stuff like that. A couple of episodes ago someone said that maester lewyen kept all received scrolls and little finger gave a look like "oh yeah?"

Can we get something else out of the way about this whole Targaryean/dragon link? Maybe I missed it the first time around and still have not gotten there in my rewatch.
What is the fucking link here? Dany raised the dragons. So she is the mother. Sure. Fine. But as far as I remember she was gifted the eggs by the dude who facilitated the relationship between her and the Dorthraki, and she took ownership at that point. Why would the dragons give any fucks about any other Targaryean, like Jon? Is there some link between the dragons and the Targaryean lineage that I'm missing?

Re: Game of Thrones Season 7 - WAR IS COMING
Dragons are the family's spirit animal, like the Stark/Wolf, Lannister/Lion, etc. If you mean these specific dragons since the eggs came from someone else, I'd assume that these dragons are descendents of other dragons. Other dragons used to kick it with the Targ ancestors back in the day.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:Can we get something else out of the way about this whole Targaryean/dragon link? Re: Game of Thrones Season 7 - WAR IS COMING
Yeah I just read that Aegon used to ride dragons in some war or something. I'm over it.
Something else I thought was dumb - Tyrion, Dorthraki, Dany, Drogon, etc see Bronn and Jamie dive into the water....that doesn't look to be more than a puddle (I understand they revealed it to be a river), Jamie sinks 80 feet down in his armor....and they let them walk out the other side of the banks? No one waits to see if they will surface so they can take them captive? Dany doesn't fly around on the dragon scouring for them or something?
I thought for sure Jamie was going to survive (as Travis pointed out earlier, wouldn't make sense for them to kill him off that way) but he would be taken POW. Really doesn't make sense that he walked free, even if we are to suspend belief enough to think that Bronn is a better swimmer than a dolphin and could fish Jamie out and deliver him 1/2 mile downstream. I guess if Jason Bourne can do it...

Yeah, and to add to it... later on Tyrion is all like "yo I gotta go to kings landing and talk to Jaime."
So wait, you knew he survived? And no one was like "hey let's go get that dragon flying over head and find that guy he's important." It would have been easy enough in that battle to have Jaime get knocked out and have bronn grab him and run off to avoid all of that altogether.

Well I just mean how did you even know Jaime was alive? And if you knew he was alive, before torching the tarley twins why not take a minute to find Jaime first? It could make sense that they assumed him dead, but then Tyrion isn't going to try to meet with a dead man a day later.
