Pinehurst #2 always one of my favorites.

Figuring Phil finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory once again.

Both players play wrong ball.  2 stroke penalty.   tOfficial U.S. open thread 502811600 tOfficial U.S. open thread 502811600

Mahan hits Donaldson's ball. Donaldson then hits Mahan's ball. Oops.

Playing the par-4 18th, Mahan and Donaldson played their approach shots into the hole. Once they got there, they realized they had played each other’s golf ball by mistake. The penalty is two-fold: two strokes added to each player’s score, then they have to go back and replay their ball from the original spot where they should’ve played it in the first place.

So does the stroke you took hitting the wrong ball count too ?

In an ironic twist, if Martin Kaymer grounds his club in four bunkers right now, Dustin Johnson will be your leader.

No. Instead of hitting (shot) 2 from the fairway, they replay and are now hitting (shot) 4 from the fairway.

NBC has the worst golf coverage on planet. They kill the US Open for me. Example- "Now lets go to Webb Simpson on 16. He's 11 shots back putting for birdie from 44 feet." gee, i wonder if this putt is going to go in.

I think every network covering golf does that. That's not my issue. My issue is when they focus in on 2 groups regardless of their scores and ignore those who are in striking distance of the lead. They'll show those groups walking up the fairway when they could have easily shown 3/4 shots in that time frame. NBC is done covering the US Open after this year as it's switching to Fox, who I don't think has ever (?) covered golf. Will be strange watching a US Open without Johnny Miller calling everyone out  tOfficial U.S. open thread 502811600

Or a Jean Vandvelde. I don't see it happening to Kaymer. He's is too locked in and focused. It would take a collapse and a great 36 holes from someone else ( Snedeker?) to beat him.

Kaymer gets to 8 today and there are a few guys getting to 4 or 5 under then its game on tomorrow. I do recall Kaymer staggering down the stretch at TPC last month. If Kaymer shoots anything under par then its basically lights out.

A couple of dozen guys have already teed off today and most are posting some fat numbers. Course will be playing real tough today.

Bingo. The most drama at Pinehurst is how far a ball will roll off of the crowned greens.

I can't claim to be a golf fan, but I do follow the majors at least a little bit. Usually watch casually at sports bars, and then on Sunday afternoon if it's close.

I like that the US Open is set up as an impossible course, year after year. A test isn't a true test unless most of the best fail. Just because no one scores 100% doesn't mean that no one gets an "A".

Besides, I suck at golf. It's nice to see the best in the world look like I do. I am willing to ignore the hole lengths, pin locations and all the other shit that makes it much harder. I get it, they're playing a tough course. I just like seeing them hit the green, and then end up a country mile off the green. I know the feeling.

Grew up playing on a course with one water line down each fairway, with burnt out rough on either side.....not nostalgic for that, and not crazy about the look of the "new" Pinehurst.

Love the look. Never been a fan of wall to wall green. You need a tee, a fairway, a green and a few bunkers/water hazards. After that, you get whatever. Trees should not come into play often either, if at all. What I'm not fan of Pinehurst were the turtleback greens. Ross never intended those severe of slopes combined with stimping them at 12. Those are not the original shape of those greens. The initial design was to provide proper surface drainage, not make golfers look stupid.

Glad Kaymer won it. He deserved it.

All good points. Unfortunately if they continue to play at traditional legacy courses you're gonna see that. For those courses today to play at a level of difficulty akin to yesteryear they'd have to be lengthened to 8000 yards. I think kaymer hit an 8 iron into a 186 yard par three today. And that's all carry. Shit, Hogan might have hit one 150 back in the day.
