I know you follow this stuff. How have most #1 picks faired in baseball? I hear the tigers are already talking third base for him. But was wondering how #1 picks usualy pan out.

Baseball draft is a total mess of flameouts usually. I don't care as much about his position as others because we need someone that can actually hit.

Agreed. Paying attention to the baseball draft is a rather pointless exercise. Player development is hard to track as it's all relative to the competition. I pay attention to Double-A Erie. If you can play against that level of competition, there is some predictability for ability at the MLB level. Torkelson looks to have the tools needed for success. But go back to 1997 when the Tigers had the first pick. Matt Anderson out of Rice. Got rushed to the majors, became something of a 4-A player, and it was a period in Tigers history of top-level picks that never really materialized. Greg Gohr, Eric Munson, Drumright, Griesinger, etc. The organization wasn't patient with development. I'm reluctant to praise Avila, but he's not rushing the process. Whether it pays off, who the heck knows.....

55 years of Tigers 1st round ineptitude:
List of Detroit Tigers first-round draft picks
Parrish, Gibson, Verlander & whole lot of mediocre to bust.
Might make the Lions blush a little.

College football gives a much better prediction for NFL readiness compared to anything baseball could replicate. Of the major sports, baseball is so much more a crap shoot. All the numbers in the world don't mean as much as good scouting. And that's been a historic weakness in the Tigers organization.
1976 seemed to be an oddity for Detroit though. Trammell in the 2nd round; Morris in the 5th; Ozzie Smith in the 7th (didn't sign, but he was a Tigers draft pick). Someone in the front office had a damn good year picking three Hall of Famers in one draft...

That's why the Lions would only blush a little. Still, most crapshooters could do better than 3 for 53 (.056).

The Lions are oddly impressive as you'd think a "even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time-to-time" approach would result in some accidental run to a Super Bowl. It's a special kind of incompetence.....
