Izzo has had long standing disdain for social media. He hates "the twitter" and message boards.
At his presser this week he tripled down saying ( paraphrase): " I hate, HATE, social media.
these kids read this stuff and it effects them."
He didn't mention Loyer by name but it was pretty clear who he was talking about. I've also read that Foster's parents are beyond irritated by what they hear/read about their son. If we lose the younger Loyer, the message board warriors are partially to blame.
If we lose a kid because of what he reads on a message board then he is mentally fragile and I'd rather not have him on the team.

On the flip side to all the hate Foster is one of those players that has a lot of love from the fan base. I’ve seen him play live in the Breslin and the energy in the place is so palpable when he puts up a shot. I’ve seen it and felt it. He’s got a lot of good going for him to. Also he’s alrwady exceeded everyone expectation I’ve laid out in my own dumbass thread. Go Green!

So, you think it doesn’t have an effect at all on families? Interesting. As a parent I don’t think I’d be numb to it. I certainly wouldn’t use it as a top criteria for choosing but I don’t know how you can be numb to it. I say that only because my youngest who is a sophomore at MSU now was very effected by the Nassar stuff. I was a bit surprised when she was thinking GVSU her senior year. Her mom and I were Spartans her sister was there she knew the campus, but was bothered by the jokes and derision on social media. That, of course , is only my family’s reality and we are a weird family so I don’t know about others.
he's not from a normal family. his dad coached the damn pistons.

Agree with this. He does get a lot of encouragement and cheers live at the games. It’s the social media that gets hard sometimes

Flat out stupid remark.
Why would any parent want to advise their son to go to MSU to play a sport knowing the knuckle draggers, Angry 20 and Demand Excellence jock sniffers will dedicate hours every day denigrating one of their kids.
If Fletcher Loyer is recruited and decides to attend MSU and play here it will because of Izzo and Fife convincing them the critical asshat critics and lazy media that use unattributed message board material don’t matter.
I would like someone to start exposing the Angry Twenty, their names, where they work, their athletic histories.
See how there families like reading personal crap about them.

Dude, there are trolls everywhere saying shit about anyone that has a public presence. What is flat out stupid is worrying what a kid thinks about some loser on the internet saying mean things about him.

Depends on how you define "active" and "plenty".
I'm guessing there are schools that have more critical posters than other schools.
A parent might perceive things a lot differently than you.

The trolls don’t like to be exposed.
A few have vaporized when they were exposed.
Some of the Loyer critics have crossed the line multiple times and they are still around spouting venom. If 247 won’t put them on the sidelines then expose them.
That’s my “free speech”. When exposed they whine it isn’t right because in their heads signing a National Letter of Intent to play football or basketball at a major university makes every kid on scholarship fair game. It shouldn’t.

While this is absolutely correct, I’m telling you there is a difference between somebody telling me I’m an asshole and somebody saying shit about my kid in my reaction. Maybe that’s just a Dwags reaction because that’s all I can base it on, and maybe the parents of D1 athletes are more mentally stable than I am. I’m just projecting how I would feel. Which is bad in and of itself to begin with. Maybe other parents are way different. It’s a rare thing where you have brothers follow brothers to school. We’ve had some in football. Couple of misses in basketball with Trice and Aherns. But yeah, message boards.

lol TOB did have that guy who absolutely HATED travis trice for three years and then kinda disappeared after trice turned into a monster his senior year.
and, fine, ok, there are people who go over the line on criticizing players. and usually they're probably just trolling. but things like discussing loyer's basketball ability, etc., are what fans do and have done since the beginning of sports and it's not done with vitriol toward that actual human being.

My point was that a parent might see it differently. I think I've made that pretty clear. You can say whatever you want. I'm not infringing on your free speech. Is this one of those strawman things?

What isn't accurate? That a parent might see it differently than a random internet message board guy? And 99% of what cases?
Any parent is going to look at the experience player/kid #1 had, when they consider whether to send player/kid #2 to a school.

I don't know if social media bugs the Loyers or not. Whether it should or shouldn't, or whether it bug other parents is kind of immaterial.

Negativity is a part of big time sports. If a player has a problem with it here show me a better place they can go to escape it? Maybe a smaller div II where the arena is half empty is the answer. On the flip side I do think fans should strive to be more restrained and show some more class. Watchingn somone fall short of the hype or potential is a part of the game. Deal with it.

In this case, it's not the fans in the arena that are the problem though (if the story is true).
Expectations (and criticism) might be higher for an in-state high school legend at an in-state school than they would be at a different (out-of-state) school.
I don't think that's impacting anyone's play though.
It's just internet/message board fodder.
