I did PM him back in the fall to see if he was coming to any football games - I would've swung by to meet the man, the myth, the legend in person. Didn't work out, though.

Nah, I don't look much like Stan Lee.
The one my kids tease me about when they see him is Gene Evans. Look up his appearances on MASH or Murder She Wrote.

cool - I'll check out this "Gene Evans" character.
we should start an off-season thread (though it's always "off season" at tSwill, which is why I dig it) - about our celebrity look-a-likes.

The beard coloration is nearly perfect too. I see he was 60 when he filmed that episode so even the age in that picture is pretty correct.

Now that the Bridges/Jackson era has come to a close I'm going to personally pump the brakes on hyping any one player until I've seen him play ten to twelve games in a Spartan uniform.

I've said for the last several years that Izzo just needs to go up to Flint and Saginaw and sign the five toughest mofos he can find. Don't fuck around with Detroit (soft) or Ohio or Indy. Find tough ass bitches who want a street fight.
I know the declining populations of those cities have hurt their youth programs and that players don't grow on trees like they used to 20 years ago, but I'd rather roll with those types of players than good guys.

Re: Let the Foster Loyer Era begin
I often thought that Izzo's success in the late 90's early 2000's - mostly with some of the hard-nosed Flint/Saginaw types - opened up the door to some of the softer, travel team, AAU type of recruits.. which, yes, they may have the sort of pedigree some programs look for or need, but I'm not sure those qualities match Izzo's personality and style.Da Mayor wrote:I've said for the last several years that Izzo just needs to go up to Flint and Saginaw and sign the five toughest mofos he can find. Again, totally anecdotal observations - I can't (and won't) provide facts, data, formulas or equations to back it up. Just a feeling.

Totally agree. I liked it better when we had the type of players who were getting busted for stealing beer from 7-11's. We need some dudes with some street in them. Choir boys are nice and make softies feel good about the character of the team they root for, but that's antithetical to what Izzo built this program on. Time to get back to our roots.

P.S. Watching the Flint Town documentary series on Netflix makes me think we need to recruit some of those dudes who have been busted for loitering in front of that liquor store

I loved those days of basketball and loved it more than the freedom of movement style of play. Sadly I think we should move away from the ‘tough bang em up style of play’. The goal is to not foul and Izzo’s been putting teams on the free throw line too much and his players are sitting on the bench too much with foul trouble. These days it’s all about speed to stay in front of the guy with the ball, length to clog lanes and Getting vertical to block shots.

'cause Jaida Hampton from EL was awarded Miss Basketball about 10 days ago. That would've been pretty cool for EL.

I don't totally disagree, but having tough dudes doesn't necessarily mean fouling a lot. It means playing like it's life or death, being relentless, and when fouling, making sure they know it. Tone would have knocked some of these fools out if they tried coming down the lane like they do. That's what I'm talking about. If you're going to foul, bloody them up and make them think twice about doing it again.

Yeah, hard to argue with that and what you said above. Yesterday Syracuse went to the line 31 times and we went 16. Our goal should be to bring one of those numbers down and the other one up. Get a tough street baller out of Saginaw that wants the ball in clutch minutes and is going to drive the lane to the basket. Mateen used to do it.

The amount of mugging for the camera that fool did, especially at Breslin, would have gotten his ass beat during the Flintstone or Draymond era. We've gotten soft since then.
