Or MSU let football keep concession and parking money and use it for that and recruiting? We will never be an SEC type team but we can do better in a ton of things. Dantonio having to use his own money, money well deserved, would be so MSU. My god, that’s the only way it would happen too. It would be embarrassing. “Hey Saban, 9.5 million? How about we peel 1.5 off and give it to a coordinator?” Saban: “nah, how about you just increase salary of all my coaches?”
MSU vs tSEC isn't really apples to apples.
The other "MSU" has 10 less varsity sports programs... So take the bottom 10 programs at MSU. Kill them all. Roll every penny up into assistant's pay checks. Cheer can be a "club" with parent paying for everything... right?
Good point. Do you want an "athletic department" or a "football department with some other shit thrown in to satisfy federal requirements"?

Emmmmm, hello? Know how many golf fundraisers and checks we wrote while Hollis was there? Fortunately we had a kid of a 15 year super bowl winning nfl player, on the team, whose father got tired of Hollis and just wrote checks the last couple years. I guess the coaches salary could also be peeled away, but she does other stuff for MSU and I’m not sure how much extra you get for that. Next time at away games see how many MSU cheerleaders are there. Then look at home games and see how many other kids the other schools send. OSU gives out scholarships and actively recruits the Midwest. Some of their kids are known as “cheerleberties”. It’s a weird world. But the MSU spirit squad shouldn’t be on your list. It’s not a budget drag. Golf? Girls team gets way more than boys team.
Concessions and parking are supposed to go to MSU general to cut food costs for the general population (I think). But if you’ve had a kid there lately, it can’t be helping that much. We need to spend more money on coaches and recruiting but I don’t have an answer as to where they can get the money designated to it from. I think unless we try to get near an OSU or uofm spending wise we’d be consistently better. But that’s just another guess.

Gun to my head? Selfishly, football. However my liberal soul knows that’s wrong. So I’d be conflicted.

Alabama and Auburn have 20 I think... So even with those schools, MSU pays for 5 more sports. (which at... guessing at coaches, secretaries, facilities, etc... say $300 k's/yr * 5...) that would fatten up a bunch of paychecks.

I hope this doesn't make me a bad person, but I wouldn't have a problem eliminating Swimming, Rowing, Field Hockey, Tennis, and (maybe) Gymnastics.

But I think the scholarships are split differently at MSU. In other words we may have a men and women’s track team but scholarships are split differently. Golf too. You could keep sports just limit boys scholarships on them till the 85 football are equaled by women’s sports. I know guys who would have played golf baseball or wrestled for free. Would it be fair? Nope. But if we’re looking for ways to get the football team money for coaches and recruiting.
I have no fair answers. But unless we figure something out the football gap will not get much smaller on a consistent basis.

Also, to be fair... they were only paying Blackwell 80 grand, and he delivered recruits (which where headcases) but still... It's not like you need 2-3 million for recruiting.

You can cut sports. Scholarships just have to match up across the board.
I think.

Point was if you’ve won a super bowl and you’re in the league for that long they’ve probably thrown some cash at him so he could help out way more than golf outings and tailgate visits could. But at MSU it’s how it’s done. As cheap as possible a lot of our sports might not be “club” sports but they just aren’t as big of a drag on the budget as people think.

IF I was AD:
Assuming Swimming and Tennis scholarships have equal numbers for men and women...Bye bye.
And then some combination of Rowing (W), Field Hockey (W), Gymnastics (W), and Wrestling (M). Throw in Cross Country (M) to make the numbers work.

Wearing that hat all day. I just started driving to East Lansing for the game. Was near 75 and 696 but said fuck it. Wife and kid going downtown for the weekend. I’m left to my own devices. I’ll just have a drink and watch on the couch. Save me 35 bucks at Dags and at least 90-100 scalping.

just making a joke, brah. but you're not wrong. what MSU could really use a billionaire donor who is REALLY into football. we have those alums, but they choose to waste their ample wealth on things like "education" and "art." smh.

I think they’re allotted, for example, five full rides. Coaches are allowed to divide them up as they see fit. Girls golf might get 7 and boys golf might get 2. Something like that.

absolutely not. spent a lot of time at dags in my day. pitcher & an olive burger or two after law school finals, every time.
watched the "caper" run game with two of my UM fan buddies when i was probably 22. after that run, the MSU-filled bar pretty much bought us shots for about an hour straight. lotta booze.

It’s one turlit I’ve never shat in. Guy I played high school football with was a bartender there in 85. He’d close Thursday’s and I think Sunday’s. It was our 5th year at MSU. I was subbing in the Lansing district and coaching football at Everette HS. I had no lesson plan responsibilities and made a decision in the morning if I wanted to sub or not. My buddie was in grad school. I’d help him clean up and we’d drink in there till 4 am or so. Not all the time but a few. I’ve probably had enough free tap beer where I haven’t made up for it yet in there money wise.

I'll post these here, from an article in The Athletic today
Some of it is harsh, but it is hard to say it isn't accurate
Instead of fully embracing change this year, Dantonio seemed like the guy who turned his car radio up a few notches in an effort to drown out the obvious clunking noise emanating from under the hood. The result was about what you’d expect: MSU’s football team standing on the side of the road with smoke pouring out of the engine while the rest of the Big Ten’s top half casually drove toward the horizon line. wrote:

What’s accurate? That change wasn’t made to the offense? Hmmm That coaches with different names weren’t on staff in 2019? Or, that production was the same as the previous year or near it? I really think if we all just declared what we wanted changed and, in our opinion, what did and what didn’t, and then, give our thoughts as to why we believe that, it saves all of us time with any potential back and forth we might have.
Because, personally, I’m tired of that generic narrative about the 2019 MSU team.
