GRR Spartan wrote:Good. MSU needs to live up to its contracts and Dantonio (who, with input of from his wife) agreed to a delayed payout of $4.3B. It’s based on the last 10 years.
I expect one or two new faces. Bollman can retire and Dantonio could privately justify to a few other coaches why their contracts won’t be renewed. I don’t expect any clearing the decks of 3 coaches on both sides of the ball.
And people say we don't pay our coaches enough.

LOL. I guess. But I think it would be interesting to see what “standards” we’d all list as wanting him to be accountable for. Ten people ten different lists I’m thinking.
disagree. it's not just the suckiness of the O.
it's that he REFUSES to make any legit changes.
it's that he's a dick to the media and anyone who questions him.
it's that he blames his fucking players and refuses to put any accountability on the guys who are paid handsomely to recruit and develop those players.
he's giving a giant middle finger to the fanbase and i don't know why people refuse to see it.
if fans didn't follow MSU football, go to games, buy gear, and watch games on TV, Mark Dantonio would not be a multi-millionaire.
Spare me the bullshit about "molding young men" or whatever. if CFB wasn't a money printing operation due solely to fan interest, Mark Dantonio would be "molding young men" for $45k a year at some ohio HS while also teaching remedial geometry.
Wow. It almost like Dantonio didn't rise to the top of his profession and do things I never thought possible for MSU football.
But now he barely above 500% so he should be making 45k at an Ohio high school.
Hey I agree that the product is bad right now but c'mon man.

i was obviously responding to the assertion of some fans that MD shouldn't be "accountable" to fans. he (and all the other big time coaches in college sports) are rich because of fans. full stop.
nowhere did i say he should be coaching in HS. slow down and read.

Oh I read it. You clearly implied that without fans and a being accountable to them he would be molding young men for 45k a year at a high school.
So I will say again that the guy once was at the very top of his profession. He earned his way to the top. And I will also say, again, that he has been failing the last few years.

and i'm also clearly right. dantonio has, and has been, paid millions because MSU has a large football fan base and because he won. that is indisputable.

DWags said that he didn't want a coach "who made changes based on admin or fan feelings."
Well, reacting to your employer and the people who pay your salary is basically the definition of accountability.

Accountability 1. Win. Do that and stay here. Win 7 fuck you you’re out.
So let’s stop pretending about anything else.
This type of checks and balances are why Austin Robertson gets admitted to the University and Dantonio collects a $4 million dollar payday. There is a middle ground and it’s appropriate to require oversight.
Sure. You cant let your coach encourage hazing or allow him to bring in East Mississippi Community college. But telling him his offense or coaches I’m just going to say nope. If you have to do that, then you have the wrong guy. Fire him.

Re: Mark Dantonio’s $4.3 million bonus day is here
I do wish MD would make some kind of a statement letting fans know what’s going on. Not knowing what direction the program is taking, when there are clearly questions to be answered, has been keeping Spartans ripping at Spartans.
I know he has a team to run and hands to shake, and not saying anything is indirectly saying it’s full steam ahead, but without a statement finalizing the focus on next season, fans are in limbo and free to speculate.
Getting everyone on the same page seems like a smart thing to do.
Meanwhile, maybe it’s the lackluster performances the past couple of years, and because it feels like the program is dying on the vine, but I’m closer to Roc and Turtleneck’s view in all of this: It’s getting harder and harder to care.

a conversation along those lines can and should be had, and i'm sure it's had regularly at programs across the country. one of the problems is that MSU has a weak AD who isn't going to say shit to MD.

Yeah. I think you're missing the point.
Accountability begins and ends with the team's record.
Period.
If he changes coaches...if he doesn't change coaches...he's accountable.
No one said he's not accountable for those decisions. He is.
Are you going to hold him less accountable if he changes a few coaches and we still finish 6-6?

frankly, probably. especially if the offense looked like it was schemed this decade. it would show that he attempted to make a change from his past practices.
what he's done is not make any changes and it hasn't worked. he should do something - ANYTHING - different in the hopes of success.

If he doesn’t see you later. How he wins short of cheating is his business. Coaches, offense, defense, philosophy, uniforms, team meals, jock straps.

Re: Mark Dantonio’s $4.3 million bonus day is here
7-6 with the same coaching staff doesn't produce much hope of anything better next year. In fact, it's likely to be worse given all the talent we're losing. On the other hand, that "talent" didn't perform very well so maybe the new "talent" will be better.
7-6 with a new OC at least makes things curiously interesting. It worked for LSU.
On the other hand. Maybe year 2 of the Brad Salem system will really take off. Don't hold your breath.
In summary, I don't know shit...just like everybody else. Still, I'd like to see some assistants get shit-canned. On the other hand, who's to say we can attract anybody better given the current state of affairs?

It's not. Just making sure that you have different standards regarding accountability than other people.
Some people will hold him accountable for wins and losses period.
But if he changes a few coaches and is nicer to the media, then you'll lower your standards a bit regarding wins and losses.
