I tend to agree. Solid movie but not the amazing masterpiece I was expecting.
The movie got better as it went on, in my eyes. That scene when he's running through the town and the flares are going off trying to kill him... wow.
I still liked it and I'll watch it again when it hits streaming.
Sidenote: Saw it in a theater that has food and drink service through the show, damn that was annoying.
Is the cinematography as good as they say? The preview scene where the plane is coming through the barn looked pretty cool.

Cinematically it was very well done. Roes comment about the flare scene was spot on. The one part of the movie I was glued.

Is that the series in German or something like that? If so, it has been on my list to watch at some point. Sounds like something I would like.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:Have we talked about "dark" on netflix yet?

Wait... I did the first season of that. Pretty good. I guess I did realize a new season. Attempting "the feed" on Amazon... Like 4 into it and slow, not great. Maybe I'll switch.

I try to stay away from the TV but my wife and I watched episode 1 of "McMillions".. was pretty interesting.
And that one FBI guy is damn funny.. at first, I wanted to punch him in the mouth and then I wanted to go drinking with him.

Homeland final season premiered last night. Still one of my favorite shows, even if they haven't quite reached the level of the first 3 seasons. Always intense, though, and I love good spy shows/movies.
In a similar vein, I just finished watching The Spy on Netflix (6 part, limited series). Not sure if it was discussed here when it came it out. I really enjoyed it, though as I said, I love spy shit, so I could be biased. True story of a Mossad agent infiltrating Syria in the 60s, starring Sasha Baron Cohen in a non-comedic role. Created, written, and directed by Gideon Raff, who wrote the Israeli TV series that Homeland is based on.

Wow. Documentary on HBO. McMillions. Fraud in the McDonald’s monopoly game. Turns out in the 1990’s families that were winning the million dollar prize had a distant connection. This winning family might have a cousin who was married to the brother of another winning family. Tip to an FBI agent is leading to this investigation I never knew happened. Was McDonalds involved? Was the marketing firm? Was their one rouge person at either place? Six part series one hour each. They’ve run two.
Funny and intriguing. Worth a look.

I went back to the top of the page. I just finished Uncut Gems. I'm not sure what I just watched. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I thought Sandler was alternating good and awful. Very disjointed. Exciting, and I kind of understood the vibe as somewhat of a gambler myself. But yeah super chaotic and kind of hard to follow.
Taking a step back I found myself wondering. The "Diamond district" in NYC. Must be a real thing? Strange story, who and why did someone decide this needed to be told?
Also I thought KG had better acting chops than Sand Man. KG was great. Elsa was also damn solid.

Started Messiah on Netflix. First two episodes are pretty interesting but I am concerned about where it goes from here. Like will it actually have anything to say or will it be like we don’t know what the truth is, you decide.

Re: tOfficial General Movies and TV Shows Discussion/Criticism Thread
I finally got around to watching Flint Town on Netflix. I'd seen it a couple of years ago and meant to go back to it, but then forgot. I was born and raised in Flint until I was 14, and then we moved just outside the city limits, so I was still always in and around the city throughout high school and summers of my first couple of years at State.
It was surreal watching this. One of my brother's good friends from back in elementary school is a police officer and was in it quite a bit, though not one that was directly named or interviewed. There was a scene in a barbershop where the people there were talking about race relations, police, etc. It was the barbershop that I got my haircut at every time from 2 until about 20 years old (though it is long-since under different ownership). Several other shots of places that I knew very well.

Really enjoyed uncut gems. Sandler killed it and it was pretty different. Chaos for sure. Obviously it’ll resonate more with gamblers

The book was good... Didn't watch the show. It read like a cop book, but there is the underlying Stephen King-ness at play. Is the show worth a look?

Three shows I'm currently watching that are worth a look. Avenue 5, pretty damn funny. Curb your enthusiasm. And yes, the characters are becoming a bit cartoonish. and McMillions. All HBO, all good enough to capture my attention for 45 minutes per week.

the first two episodes of McMillions were interesting.. kinda comical. I found the third one more depressing and didn't really have any of the humor. Maybe it's just because it's getting more serious with regard to the enterprise? I just felt really bad for the one black lady being taken advantage of and manipulated.

BCS s5 premier was solid. Lalo is a great character. The dynamic between Jimmy and Kim remains compelling and interesting. Can someone remind me of the back story between Hector and Gus that Lalo made reference to in re to Hector killing Gus' boyfriend? I do not remember this.

JMO, but I think this is the season Kim dumps Jimmy.
As for Gus’ boyfriend, early on in BB, Gus and Max, his business partner, went to see Don Eladio to propose a business partnership. IIRC, Gus had fronted the money for Max to attend college to become a chemist in order to manufacture meth. But Eladio only wanted Gus to handle the business end of distributing his (Eladio’s) own product in the US, and Eladio felt having another chemist could threaten his own business at some point in the future, so he had Hector kill Max in front of Gus to serve as a warning and lesson. Max got a nasty head shot, and viewers got to see blood drain into Eladio’s pool.
Wait, I found a better writeup than what I’ve been writing:
“Twenty years prior to the events of the series, Don Eladio met with Gustavo Fring and his partner Maximino Arciniega attempted to propose a business deal wherein they would produce methamphetamine for the cartel, which Eladio would then distribute. Eladio graciously complimented them on their chicken recipe and the conversation was civil for a time.
However, Don Eladio was unimpressed by their pitch, and had Max executed by Hector Salamanca for manipulating him into a meeting. However, he only spared Gus's life due to his currently unrevealed past in Chile. As Don Eladio and his men forced Gus to watch as the blood dripped into the pool, Hector warned him to keep his business restricted to chicken. ("Hermanos")
At some time in the ensuing few years, he entered into a partnership with Gus, who served as Don Eladio's chief distributor in the American Southwest.”
btw: If Gus and Max were lovers, I didn’t catch that undertone. I always thought the relationship was more like best friends/brothers, but I’m not very bright, so I probably wouldn’t have picked up on it, anyway.
