Question for the Old Timers
How badly did George Perles need to modernize his offense? I grew up as a young whipper snappers going to Spartan Games and I remember grown ups frowning about his play calling. Run up the middle, run left, pass on third down and punt.

Re: Question for the Old Timers
If I’m a young kid sitting in the stands and if I know where the ball is going I have to assume the other team knew where it was going.

And with Lo White they couldn't stop it. With Mandarich and a great o-line the opposing defenses were over matched. 56 carries for White in the Indiana in the game that sent us to Pasadena. We attempted 7 passes in the Rose Bowl and won. 7.
George actually threw the ball more when he had Yarema but once Bobby took over running the ball was the best option.

Don't forget MSU still only went 9-2-1 in the "glory" year.
Imagine what Rison & Ingram could've done in offenses that passed more than a handful of times a game.

It's on George for not have a passing QB. In 1986 Yarema competed 200 passes in 297 attempts. Bobby threw the ball 139 times total in 87.
That said, I will always cherish Spartan football in 1987. Gang Green beat USC twice, U of M and Ohio State.

"The best 1-2 team in the country" after getting smoked by FSU & ND. George considered the non-con games to not really count in those days. It was maddening to start every year 1-2ish with a murderous non-con schedule & basically out of the rankings/national conversation & have to climb back up in conference.

How about starting 0-4-1 in 1990 and winning a share of the B1G. Weirdest year ever.

Better than 2-9 in Muddy's last year. And the 83 team was rolling after beating ND in South Bend. A very good Illinois came to SS to start the conference schedule and the Spartans were marching up and down the field. Then Yarema got hurt got hurt. Six plays later back up Rich Kolb got hurt. Suddenly Clarke Brown, the most immobile QB in college football history, was at the helm.

Yarema was a turnover machine that would give it away in final drives.
I loved Bobby and I think people praising the offense back then are forgetting the majority of games where the fans were just disgusted with the two yard gains and all the punting.

Yarema is a top ten MSU QB in nearly every category despite playing in George's system. He was light years better than Bobby.

Who had the B10 title and Rosebowl win? Also, we had a mobile qb just needed a modern offense like the Ducks eventually developed and we win it all.

As noted earlier, the 87 team only won 9 games and got smoked by FSU and ND. They were hardly a modern offense from winning it all.

I think best part about those highs is the seasons right before it where the team is trending up. The years where you start to notice something different and play makers emerging. Someone does something where you are like huh we might be a season or two away from something special happening. It’s an exhilarating way to spend a Saturday that’s for sure and I think the lows we experience make the highs that much better.

'12 was a huge disappointment (Maxwell). Wasting Bell & an elite D. '13 was a mess until Cook emerged. Remember the chants for Damion Terry?

Walking around L.A. the day after the Rose Bowl and seeing the Auburn & Florida State fans showing up, thinking we should be in this game was the only sad part of that trip.

Yeah, you are correct in thirteen the trending up occured after the ND game. I do think the TCU bowl game gave us a glimmer of hope that we would fill in an important piece.
