Why did Michigan hire Brady Hoke?

Is he a great tactician on offense? Or defense? Or with a position group?

Is he a great manager/CEO?

Is he just a lovable guy/great recruiter?

They couldn't get anyone else?

Seriously...why did they hire him? What did Brandon see?

I don't see any great coaching from the guy...on either side of the ball. He doesn't appear to be a great CEO/manager type. Did Brandon really get sucked in by a rah-rah player's coach/cheerleader? Like he was picking someone to fire up the Domino's troops at a corporate outing?

He spouted all the "Michigan Man" stuff, which is exactly what everyone in Ann Arbor wanted to hear.

And no one else was interested in the job.

Hoke is happy to just be there, so he's easy to control. He's not going to cause any conflicts on campus, or seek power.

They couldn't get Harbaugh, they couldn't get Miles. Hoke was like plan C or D.

Hoke was not ready to take over a job like UM. I would want to see what a guy can do at a BCS caliber program first. Winning in the MWC when your recruiting base in Southern California can't be a terribly difficult job.

One of the 8 would have to be MSU or OSU. If he goes less than 9-3, I think he's in trouble. If UM loses to ND and Utah (or some other early season loss like Rutgers or Penn State), things will get interesting in AA.

They missed on Les and Harbaugh, and the more time that passed the worse they'd look. They decided to settle on Hoke because of his ties to the program and ran with the narrative that they'd get back to being 'Michigan' after they got away from who they are during the Dick Rod era.

Honestly, Dick Rod was a bigger threat. Say what you want about the guy but he is an offensive genius. Hoke is just average at everything involving football, 'cept maybe for croooootin' but that doesn't even matter since he can't develop.

Michigan's not looking so great on the 2015 recruiting scoreboard right now. That's not a good sign for a program that has pumping recruiting as their salvation. You can only sell the future for so long.

Can't see Harbaugh ever going back, and Brandon would never hire him.

Miles maybe. If he won another NC at LSU, he might make the jump. But, the timing of that would make it difficult.

I've read things from former ADs saying you don't fire a coach without making sure you have a replacement. I'm assuming DB thought he could get the pick of the litter because it was Michigan.

Harbaugh was never coming to Michigan, and Les Miles was blacklisted bc of banging Moeller's wife. Fitzgerald said no, as did Schiano (IIRC?), and hoke was probably option 5. He turned around SDSU and BSU, but he did it at the expense of future program security. BSU was competing for a BCS bid one year, and won two games over two years. Hoke put all his eggs in one basket (burning redshirts and taking JuCos). He fucked over his alma mater to get a better job.

This is all been openly confirmed. What follows is opinion:

When Brandon struck out on the options he thought would take it, he panicked, and saw Hoke doing (admittedly) good things in SD and Muncie. He offered him the job, with the caveat that they would get strong and accomplished coordinators who would do most of the heavy lifting. However, because it's Michigan and Brandon didn't want the egg on his face of making a shitty hire, he ridicuously overpaid for Hoke. Hoke was on record saying Michigan was his dream job, and he'd walk there for it. DB proceeds to give Plan D a monster contract. This screams of ego.

I think this is also why Hoke didn't wear a headset. He thought it gave off an old school aura because his coordinators were doing the work anyway.
