Am I an Asshole?

I had a flat tire, and luckily discovered it shortly after leaving my house and came back. We found its a decent size hole, and air won't hold to take it somewhere. No idea how this happened either.

Anyway, because my car is a company car, I have to call the fleet services and they work it out. They sent a guy to put the spare tire on for me, and i have to take my tire in to get replaced.

I'm watching the guy do it, and when he finished, I asked if I needed to sign anything on behalf of my company. He said no, but I do accept tips. This took me completely by surprise, and I thought he was joking at first. I said, I'm sorry, I don't have any cash on me (not even in my wallet).

Am I an asshole for not tipping him? This is not something I expected at all. And I feel bad, but I had no idea this could even be a thing.

No you're not. If his employer isn't paying him enough he should take it up with his employer. Not you.

But I guess it is a service industry. I know it's not comparable to waitresses.
I feel like a jerk, and that was incredibly awkward telling him I had no cash. Dude could fuck up my car, he knows where I live.

You can only speak the truth. You had something unfortunate happen to you that you weren't prepared for and didn't have any cash on hand. Tough luck for him. It's not like you wouldn't have thrown him $10 or $20 if you had it. I wouldn't think twice about it. It's not like you ordered delivery and stiffed the driver.

The "service industry" is roughly 2/3's of our economy. I don't think you need to tip everyone who provides a service.

My guess would be most do not tip a guy who comes to change a tire, but some people certainly would. That said, it doesn't sound like it was I-94 in a snowstorm at 2:00 am (definitely tip there).

I thought of this afterwards. I could technically do it, but since I’m on maternity leave, I cannot use my corporate card.

FWIW, I leave $25 or so in small bills in my glove compartment just for the random times I get caught without cash.

Not an asshole. You were caught off guard. If you feel bad about it and it’s not going to sit well with you, you could check your paperwork or call fleet services to get his name. Then, figure out how you want to get him the tip. I did the same thing last week with an in-home delivery. Had no cash, so I told the guys I’d drop something off at their office. If it never gets to them, it’s on whomever blocks the delivery. I feel better having followed through on my word.

btw, unless you think the guy was really pissed at you, I doubt he’s going to come back and do something to your car. That would be an extreme overreaction.

The big question is: WTF does everyone think they deserve a tip for just doing what they were hired to do?

I mean waiters and waitresses, yes, because they get paid crap wages but everyone else is making at least minimum wage and even now most everyone is making a few dollars more than minimum wage.

I always give 20%. I rarely give a 25% tip unless the service is great or I’m paying with cash and I’m lazy. 15% for bad service and I’m an easy going person so this rarely happens.

I gave my first 10% to a waiter recently. I ordered a beer and food and got my food before I got my beer. And he didn’t give me it. I had to ask for it and the bartender had to walk from behind the bar to give me it. When I finished my meal the waiter was nowhere to be found and I had to wait for 20 minutes. The bartender again came from behind the bar and did the payment.

“I’m sorry Rusty is very busy today”.

Sorry Rusty, you just received the worst tip I’ve ever given out.

I’ve told this to other people that are not as nice and forgiving as I am and they said I shouldn’t have even given him any tip.

I have no idea also what the cost of this would be. I don't see a bill. This doesn't go on my corporate card, because fleet is separate from that.

Anyway, I'm feeling better it's not just me. I am not one to ever not tip people, even when they suck.
