The Peanut Barrell has sold
After over 40 years Joe and Jennifer have elected to cash out and retire. New owner is Mike from Crunchy's and he will do a good job keeping the icon going. Mad props to the Bell's for working their asses off and now being able to chill. Long live the PB!

Good for them. Time to sit on the right side of somebody else’s bar.

Agreed. Joe was a mentor of mine back in the day. I've always looked up to him for the guy he is and his work ethic. I made it 24 years and couldn't go another day. I simply can't imagine going another 15 plus

My tolerance for obnoxious drunks, especially obnoxious drunk college students, would wear thin about three days into my tenure, so I consider all three of you to have the patience of Saints.

When did Peanut Barrel and Crunchy's open? Know duffy has answered the question before but same goes for Land Shark.

No idea on specifics, but the Nut was there back in the days of the Bagel/Fragel Factory—before that area was redeveloped. Do you remember the big parking lot to the immediate west of the old building? And for some weird reason, I remember that lot always having a huge pothole, but I’m probably mistaken.
As for Landshark, my guess is 83/84-ish.

The "Barrel" was there around "72", so sooner than that.
They used to have a Beatle's cover band playing there all the time.

Really? Was in EL fall 77 thru mid summer 81 and don't recall ever going there. Was it a snooty place then? Did you have to wear khakis and penny loafers?Trapper Gus wrote:The Pantry wrote:Please forgive me. I'm old.

Not familiar with many restaurants/bars/pizza mentioned here. Bagel Fragel sounds familiar but don't think I ever went there...Frandor?tGreenWay wrote:The Pantry wrote:Please forgive me. I'm old.

Duffy likely knows more about EL/area restaurants over the years than most. He should start a thread.
My favorite. Great food anytime of day.

The PB originally open around 72 but the Bells bought it around 76. At the time it was double the size occupying the space next door that became bunches.
Crunchys opened in around 79. They are on their 3rd owner.
the Landshark, formally Cave n the Candles ( the first license in EL) then Roberts owned by spartan great Robert Viney, opened in 86. Now on their 4th owner.

I don’t remember PB in their current location, and I was at MSU in the latter half of the ‘70’s. If it was, it wasn’t that popular. The popular places were Dooleys, Alley Eye (spelling?), Lizzards Underground, the Brewery (which became something else), and another place on the east end of GR that I can’t remember.duffy munn wrote:The Pantry wrote:Please forgive me. The PB has always been a popular spot. Dooleys, the second licensee in EL, was iconic. Printed money.
Lizards became Ricks in 1980. The Alley Eye is now the Riv ( Casey's in between)

There actually might have been a second Bagel Fragel location in the area. Maybe Frandor, also possibly along Trowbridge. Pretty sure they also had a place in ann arbor, too.
PanTree was great.

Are you sure about the Alley Eye location? I thought that predated or succeeded The Players’ Club, later to become B’zar. I was just a wee lad then, so I might have my geography wrong.

She didn’t get to EL until 85/86, so go on Pretzel Bell. Possibly at Dooley’s. As we’ve talked about before, Bob was GM then. One manager was a skinny guy with dark, curly hair.
