Re: The Peanut Barrell has sold
I don’t ever remember going to PB. Did they have bands? I remember places like the Olde World that had folk singers (and best clam chowder I have ever had) and America’s Cup, but nothing about Peanut Barrel.duffy munn wrote:PennSpartan wrote:
I don’t remember PB in their current location, and I was at MSU in the latter half of the ‘70’s. If it was, it wasn’t that popular. The popular places were Dooleys, Alley Eye (spelling?), Lizzards Underground, the Brewery (which became something else), and another place on the east end of GR that I can’t remember.
The PB has always been a popular spot. Dooleys, the second licensee in EL, was iconic. Printed money.
Lizards became Ricks in 1980. The Alley Eye is now the Riv ( Casey's in between)

Are you sure about the Alley Eye location? I thought that predated or succeeded The Players’ Club, later to become B’zar. I was just a wee lad then, so I might have my geography wrong.
I think you're right. It became Americas Cup.
ACup was on the ground floor. Alley Eye, PC, and B’Zar were all in the basement.
(Pantry, I remember it being Alley Eye first, too, thought I wasn’t old enough to get in.)

Alley Eye was definitely in the basement. They had something like 10 cent beers or dollar pitchers during the weeknights. It was ridiculous.tGreenWay wrote:duffy munn wrote:

Not familiar with many restaurants/bars/pizza mentioned here. Bagel Fragel sounds familiar but don't think I ever went there...Frandor?
Duffy likely knows more about EL/area restaurants over the years than most. He should start a thread.
My favorite. Great food anytime of day.
From the Archives: PanTree Restaurant
There actually might have been a second Bagel Fragel location in the area. Maybe Frandor, also possibly along Trowbridge. Pretty sure they also had a place in ann arbor, too.
PanTree was great.
Have a place in A2 - just north of north campus on Plymoth Road.

As noted, the PB had a house band which only covered the Beatles ...
Probably did start around 72, as that was about the time East Lansing started allowing alcohol. Before that all the bars were at the city limits, aka Coral Gables, The Stables, Mac's, Dagwoods ...

Recall the building being split level. Never went to America's Cup but recall it being next to the record store (Wherehouse?) upstairs. Alley Eye was downstairs, under AC.tGreenWay wrote:duffy munn wrote:

Recall the name of someplace called B'Zar.

Re: The Peanut Barrell has sold
Think there were two Bagel Fragel. One in EL and the other in AA. Late 70's when I was at MSU and later when we moved back they Sunday routine was hit the news stand for NY Times/Freep/DetNews and LSJ followed by a stop for bagels and fragels.
Don't remember Peanut Barrel as a frat boy place. Moon's above the old basement El Az and PinBall Pete's was another regular stop.

She didn’t get to EL until 85/86, so go on Pretzel Bell. Possibly at Dooley’s. As we’ve talked about before, Bob was GM then. One manager was a skinny guy with dark, curly hair.
Bob was around forever. Still run into him now and again. Good dude. Curly haired dude was probably Tom.
That sounds right.

That's cool that Mike bought it. I wonder if some of the people who recently left are going to come back to PB. A few are at Crunchy's now.

I’d probably enjoy that now more than in my college days. I was into Jethro Tull, ELP, King Crimson, and such.Trapper Gus wrote:PennSpartan wrote:

Well, you are a kid, after all ...
For a guy whose older sister was crazy about the Beatles the cover band at the PB did a really excellent imitation of them.
Re: The Peanut Barrell has sold
I had heard rumblings back in the fall. Even heard some 'unofficial' official stuff before Christmas.
Talked with Jennifer this morning for about 20 minutes. She gave me the details. Very happy for her and Joe. They deserve to ride off into the sunset.

Hey Duff- we're at the PB twice a week. Tonight we just sat at the bar for a couple of hours with Joe and Jennifer. Was so nice to just hang, talk and laugh. Gonna miss them.

It takes only a handful that are very very far right to "balance" a bunch of moderates that lean left.

My wife’s friends lived in that house when it was over by the Paul Revere. She looked around at breakfast years ago and asked him if by chance the house had been moved. He told us the story. Cool place.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being ‘I sneak occasional peeks while at men’s room urinals’ and 10 being ‘I just got a professional massage by a guy and it was fabulous’ how afraid are you of the word “Gay”?
