Re: Big Ten basketball 2023-24
Watched more of the UM-NW than I should have. Michigan has some decent players. Reed would probably start for us. The Finnish guy was a good player. Williams is a nice complimentary piece and Burnett is a smooth player. But, my God, their guard spot is flat out awful. Without the "can't do my homework" guy they literally have no functional guards.
My other take away was that Boo Bouie is the best player in the Big Ten under 7' tall. Didn't know he was Taylor Battle's brother.

I think he’s also two years away from Social Security. Seriously though he’s kicked our ass more than once.

I don't want to pollute the game thread...
Can't you just give it to Eady every play? There is no way this game is ending on time is it? WTF CBS.

I’ve been watching Martelli. Dude looks completely checked out. Like maybe Howard told him to stop being demonstrative on the bench. I think at Howard is hearing social media, saying that many people at Michigan would rather have Martelli as the head coach

I think he knows Juwan is dead man walking and doesn't GAF (as much).
Martelli is 69. Do Michigan fans still want him? I wouldn't.

Is there a saying that is the opposite of "rising tides lift all boats"? When UM was making sweet sixteens people thought Phil was a savant and guys like Saadi were getting head coaching offers.
Now? Not so much.

Michigan loses to Rutgers by 30 last night. Seems like they will lose big at OSU and then lose at home to Nebraska before losing on Wednesday in the Big10 tourny.
What kind of senior day will that Nebraska game be?

Heh Iowa exposing northwestern. Once Boo finally grows up and enters the real world I expect them to return to bottom feeder status.

Don't know if it's so much that Iowa exposed NW as it is that Iowa seems to be getting legitimately better especially since they put the coach's kid on the bench and now start Dix (??). Also NW is down one of their best players in Ty Berry.
But you're right that once Boo is gone, NW seems likely to retreat back to the bottom. Wonder if Chris Collins will strike while the iron's hot and take a bigger $$ job?

I think izzo needs a more modern offense to beat a team as good as Purdue. I did like our effort though and think we can best NW if we show up and play like we did Saturday.

I think that Izzo needs his guards to defend against the 3-ball on a team that uses inside to outside ball movement to get open 3-ball shots for the guards.

Sometimes it's the players not the scheme. Purdue has a player in Edy who is virtually unstoppable. They have shooters that make 3 pointers at a 40% rate. A combination that is almost impossible to beat unless you double/triple team Edy and Purdue has an off day shooting 3 point shots.

Maybe, however
Don't double team Eddy or have the defense totally collapse on him when he gets the ball and the 3-point shooters will not get wide open shots, which is the reason their percentage is so high.
Pick your better option, 2 points from Eddy or 3-points from outside.

It's not that simple though. If you don't double him, he has a better chance of scoring and/or picking up fouls and shooting FTs.

Izzo is old so his offense must not be modern, right? Yet his teams usually do well in offensive efficiency, and do extremely well when he gets good guard play - even though MSU is in the Big Ten and plays one of the toughest out-of-conference schedules in the nation.

Yep, I always crack up when people use the term modern offense. WTF? They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Like the number of hours is a spend in the lab are going to clinics or coaching or watching film., does it make mistakes? Oh heck yeah he does. We have the benefit of hindsight and it’s very frustrating sometimes.

Let him score, just beat the rest of the team.

I think we did OK defensively. They just made some shots.
Meanwhile, Hoggard and Walker each missed 10 shots.
I think Walker is battling through some pain. We need him to attempt more than two 3s in a game like that. Purdue did a good job defending him.

Walker hasn't looked completely like himself lately. Not sure if it's fatigue, nagging injuries, or both, but we need the best version of him for this team to make any kind of run at all.
I also would like more Holloman and less Hoggard most games.

Maybe teams are just defending him better, but his 3 point shooting has dropped from 47% his 1st year to 37% this year. That's a big drop. It looks like (with our seed) we're going to need a hero to just get into the Sweet 16. He's a scorer. We need him to score.
I think Hoggard has tunnel vision sometimes. Maybe he's trying to take on too much with Walker slowed a bit.

He is playing with a groin injury from a couple of weeks ago, don't know how long that takes to heal, but I guessing it will bother him for the rest of this season.
