I'm going to be a "low information" citizen from now on.
Otherwise, I'm laying in bed freaking out over the environment collapsing from global warming (impending amazon positive feedback loops from increased carbon)... world war 3 in europe and the middle east because you know the jack off would love that shit... then having to wonder what side the US would be on in WW3... WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK?
I have no idea how to reverse the level of idiocy and cruelty the country is apparently yearning for.
Yeah, I won't be on tBin much anymore. Can't take it.

one of the more important aspects of being a functional citizen is understanding what we do and don't have control over. What we can and can't influence. Those lines can get blurred when we expose ourselves to a non-stop flood of vitriol, hate and negativity.
it's perfect cool to disconnect. It's healthy.

Me too, but then yesterday at work I started going over a speech in my head that I would say to a representative and)or group of Dems. I had a lot to say and it was pure gold. The party would have made me head of strategic planning if they heard it. But it's gone now, not sure what it all was. It was like genius ideas you come up with in the shower but then forget.
So yeah, my initial reaction was to just go watch some TV and stay off the news, curl up in a ball. But now I'm not sure. I think we need to fight. You can't just take a bunch of people calling you the enemy of our country and respect them after they end up winning. You don't get to brand us that way and then demand respect. Nope, no way. It's fucking on. But then again there's a lot of appeal to just ignoring it and trying to live. So I'm a mixed up mess right now.

I haven't hung out with any republicans/libertarians in years.. I don't need that kind of hatred in my orbit.
I'm into trail running, cycling, mountain biking, road cycling, listening to good music, taking naps, hanging around my wife and my kid (when she's in town or we go visit), and wore to mobilize and engage like-minded decent people who love and respect their family, friends and neighbors.
I'm a privileged upper-middle class white guy, so I can do all of that. Not everyone can, and that's where I get a little stuck.
but I can take care of myself and those closest to me and we're fortunate for that.

If I was retired with no kids or grown up kids, I'd be fucking livid and joining every gd political event locally and in my state, trying to speak and get them to fucking listen. But I work and have young kids, so I have to think about that too.
I'm staying off the news sites. I'm done with CNN, they are the worst offender and are clearly trying to stake out space in the middle, which is very damaging as they give legitimacy to trump.

she's very fortunate, as she's studied abroad, traveled abroad with an orchestra at one point. She has those experiences to draw from. She has a couple of degrees already so she has options. It doesn't mean that it doesn't suck for her that half the country sees her as property, something to control, someone who doesn't possess much more value than a domesticated animal.
It would be difficult to be a conscientious parent of younger kids who loves and respects females, our families, friends and neighbors and try to explain this to them in a manner that they might not yet even be able to fathom (not sure how old your kids are).
Good luck with things and lean into the positive aspects of life, those people who light you up. Your kids will need those examples amplified for them in a world that is a getting darker.

My kids saw all the trump ads. Explaining that the prospective president of the United States is a horrible amoral liar is in fact difficult. You start getting questions like "why would anyone vote for him?", and that's something I just can't answer.

Most of us here don't understand but I'm guessing the same group of Swill posters never watched The Apprentice, never thought anything candidate and President Trump ever said was courageous and rarely if ever watched FoxNews.
We have existed in our sphere where we incorrectly thought that a significant number of voters would see thru the bluster and lies. We learned enough voters admire Trump's bravado, his brand of Christianity and telling like it is (even if it isn't). They see his relationships with Putin and the Saudi Arabia as good business. If he gets personal gain, that's who he is and that's okay. (My Trump voting family members who we see at funerals and formerly at holidays have said on why they voted for him in '16 , '20 and I'm assuming 2024.)
I'll end this rant with a bit of history. Hitler came to power by convincing the farmers and small business owners in the hinterlands in largely agricultural post WW1 Germany that the leadership should have never surrendered. Germany could have won WW1. They ignored the facts that Germany was starving. There was no food for the Army or Navy. There was no fuel for the Navy. The German Generals and Admirals wanted the war to end because they didn’t want to see their troops starve anymore.
I don't see a lot of difference between 1929-1932 Germany and 2016 -2024 United States in that context.

the mainstream media is the devil
One of the nauseating things about Trump is how inadvertently right he sometimes is.
"CNN is fake news." That's true, at least as it pertains to CNN TV. Like Foxnews and MSNBC it is just a bunch of bloviating blowhards trying to keep you transfixed. What is on there isn't really very reliable or factual but they present themselves as News. Not news presented as news: Fake News
"The Media is the enemy of the people." Do I actually have to argue the correctness of this statement?
The best way to be a high information citizen is to not do that shit or have any "News" feeds. I don't need to be fed anything.
Read real journalism with open eyes. NYT, Reuters, AP. Know what you are looking at and the limitation actually allows time to digest and turn the facts over and make meaning out of it. Long form journalism may be dead but even with a resting pulse closer to Bob's than yours is it is still smarter than "breaking fake news."

I basically divorced myself from the 24 hour news cycle in June 2023. I'm still aware enough of what's doing on. I think it can be done and not become a low IQ person (Trump's language).

Pay enough attention to the "news" to know who to vote for, and why. Then vote. After that there is nothing else to be done so don't sweat it.

Right... and that's how he got the shithead vote.
Yes, prices are too high... no, it had ZERO to do with Harris and if Biden didn't do what he did it would have been exponentially worse (but of course no one said that out loud for the dummies to hear).
Yes, trans girls want to play sports... no, NO GROWN ASS MAN IS INVADING YOUR HIGH SCHOOL DAUGHTER'S LOCKER ROOM. In fact, there are only 2 trans girls in the entire state of Michigan out of 170k athletes.

CNN and those other outlets aren’t news Rick, they are opinion. NYT has an opinion page, too. CNN does have a news show at about 6am, but if you’re watching at 2pm it’s opinion. They don’t even try to hide it, other than the name of the station.Rick Saunders wrote:the mainstream media is the devil

These are the places a lot of people are getting their news from. It's worth while to know what is being pandered to the masses. You don't need to believe it, but you should be aware of it. Get out of your echo chambers and see what's happening in the world.
Yes. Not sure why you find that funny?

I just get a kick out of it because it'll probably work on some low-information folks.

By only staying in your echo chamber and not being aware of what the general public is thinking, it is YOU who willfully remain a low information voter.

But if it makes you feel better to think I'm a low information voter, I understand.

Did this physically hurt you to type? Even as a joke? Did you feel the pain or was it more mental?Trapper Gus wrote:As a low information voter I'm blaming the election results on all those corporations who made high profits on the excuse of shipping costs which created the high inflation.

It seems you keep trying to put me on a a high plane of knowledge and I keep trying to dissuade you from doing so...

Oh, I KNOW you’re low information. With every post you make you confirm it. It’s dinosaurs like you who are killing America. Yeah, you’re cool with your not working hard aesthetic and your washed up 70’s music. If you’re not with us, you’re against us. Get the fuck out of the way and let those of us with half a brain fix the Democratic Party. I promise we won’t abolish Medicare and you’ll be fine.

Everything you post something like this shows how little you keep up on what is posted on this board.
Bob will probably consider himself very lucky if he reaches Medicare age.

Well, then maybe Bob should do something better with his time than hanging out here?

He does, mostly. Besides this is the premium MSU sports board, what could be better than posting on here?

You seem annoyed. You should maybe take your own advice.
