Three Amigos was on MGM the other night, and having not seen it in a long time I set the DVR. Classic.

The talk here got me curious. I caught most of it in and out of sleep last night. I'm glad I was watching on my (little) phone. I thought the dialog hearkened back a bit to True Grit, but some of the gore was pretty extreme. I don't see a need to see it again.

The Last Great American Western Turns 25

A quarter-century after its release, the world of Unforgiven seems frighteningly familiar. It was once hard to imagine that the Western would ever go out of fashion. As epitomized by the novels of Zane Grey, the movies of John Wayne, and television shows such as The Lone Ranger and Gunsmoke, the genre was a fictionalized reflection of American history, one of our few truly indigenous art forms. Today, the Western has all but faded from popular culture, perhaps paralleling the dissipation of our frontier mentality and the loss of our connection to the land in an increasingly urbanized society. The traditional Western narrative, with its archetypes of good and evil, (“white hats” and “black hats”) seems far too simplistic and idealistic for an increasingly diverse and multiethnic society formed by the upheaval of the 1960s and the political scandals of the 1970s. The genre seems not just out of fashion, but outdated, a relic of the irretrievable American past.

Slow West kind of sucked.

Tracker is pretty good. It's not set in the U.S. but it plays like a western.

Inglourious was good, Django was very good....

Red River was on MGM the other night. Somehow, I've never seen it before. That's my entertainment for tonight, by the power of the DVR.

Why haven't some of these classics been remastered to 4x3 format?

I think Little Big Man is my favorite.  Johnny Guitar is a quirky one that culminates with a gunfight between Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge.  The Plainsmen is a must for fans of the early Gary Cooper in a De Mille western spectacle and Stagecoach for a dose of John Ford with a young John Wayne.  Missouri Breaks with Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson.  The original Gunsmoke is easily the greatest TV western.  Its four main characters are all icons of TV history.  Laramie seems to be a little underrated - hot young blond stud runs a remote ranch-way station miles from any female with the help of a hot blooded dark haired pretty boy.

You can still watch 16:9. Just with the bars. I'd rather have the bars than see 4:3. The pan and scans are annoying.

I agree, I never watched much Laramie until INSP and Grit started airing it. It's now in my Top Ten Western series. Not great but pretty watchable.

I just watched this last week. Went in with low expectations after hearing some reviews. Thought it was ok. Samuel L. Jackson's story about how he let that General's son die was pretty fucked up.

Like Matty said, something was a bit off with the movie as a whole though.

Just watched remake of The magnificent seven. Meh.

Denzel was great as always. But misses the character of the original. The Chris Pratt character was annoying as all get out.

I'm of the mindset that some movies are untouchable and shouldn't be remade. I'm never watching this one.

Agreed. Only did cause it was free on Amazon Prime.

I've resisted my kids urging on True Grit for the same reason.
