So last night I watched Once Upon A Time In The West. I should start by saying that The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is my favorite movie of all time. Not just my favorite western, but my favorite movie. Of course OUATITW was also directed by Sergio Leone.
While I though OUATITW was a good movie, I don't understand the reviews on IMDB about it being so brilliant. Loved the cast by the way: Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, and Jason Robards. And I do like the fact that while Fonda may be the worst of the three, much like TGTBATU, none of three principals were exactly a "good guy". Bronson's Harmonica being the closest.
The thing that bothered me most about the movie was the score. Ennio Morricone did a brilliant job with TGTBATU, but with Once I just didn't like it. The main piece of music used throughout the movie almost had a comedic sounding quality to it. It just didn't fit well. In fact, as Cheyenne is dying at the end of the film, that piece is playing and it really doesn't do the gravity of the situation justice.
All in all a good movie, just not a masterpiece like TGTBATU.
Oh fuck off you illiterate wankstain. Once Upon a Time in the West is one of the most perfect movies ever made and the score is fucking genius. Watch it again. Every character has their own leitmotif, which plays just fucking beautiful homage to silent movies. And it's so fucking playful, my god, but clearly above the intelligence of the average knob jockey like yourself. Only an dish-faced cockwomble like you could find it strange that Cheyenne's theme would continue through her death - my god, we hear it before we even see her face!
If you don't think that isn't one of the greatest moments in film, then I hope you shit yourself to death.

When I joined Netflix I made it a point to check out Deadwood because I'd heard so many good things about it. I made it though 5-6 episodes and gave up. The story looked pretty good, and I'm a pretty darned good cusser, but it seemed like every third word out of Al Swearingen's mouth was cocksucker. I thought the language was way over the top.
This. I lasted 5 minutes. Completely unnecessary.

EXCELLENT MOVIE.
Referred to quite often as "the anti-western". What am I missing? I thought it was a great movie. And much like Leone's westerns, the good guys are bad guys too.
It's pretty much considered an "anti-western" because it views violence as a last, and ultimately bad, resort for handling conflict. I wasn't really a big fan of it, but not because of its message and definitely not because it's a Western, which may be the best movie genre.

See, I disagree strongly with this. Violence is the best way to resolve conflict that was caused initially by violence. If these guys go to trial, get tried and convicted of their crime, then there is nothing left to be seen here. But the sheriff screws up and requires ponies as repayment, to the owner of the brothel. The prostitutes had no recourse but to put the bounty out on him. That was the point of the scene where the pony is rejected when offered to the cut up girl. The prostitutes weren't happy about Skinny getting the ponies in return for what the cowboys had done.
To me the main theme of the movie was that when authority oversteps its boundaries (like ruling that 6 ponies were enough payment for the crime, beating a suspect too death while in custody, and the stupid rule that you couldn't carry firearms in town) then you will have people that take the power back (the whores putting the bounty up, Will's character going into town and killing the sheriff).

Re: Any fans of Westerns here?
I'll add a few I didn't see to the list:
Jeremiah Johnson (Clint movie)
The Ox-Bow Incident
The Proposition (Australian, but legit)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (slow, but if you can be patient it's good)
Little Big Man (Dustin Hoffman in his prime)
Lonely Are the Brave (Kirk Douglas)
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Duck, You Sucker (Leone movie, any Leone is good besides The Colossus of Rhodes)
My Name is Nobody
Destry Rides Again
And if you don't mind reading subtitles, Samurai movies are basically Westerns but with swords, so those are legit as well. Can't go wrong with anything from Kurosawa.

I gotta admit, I saw Unforgiven about a decade ago (actually, while I was hanging out at MSU) and wasn't a huge fan of it, so I haven't watched it again. Who knows what my state of mind was at the time, I may need to rewatch it. But that's my recollection of why people call it an "anti-western".

That wolf stretched his 15 minutes by doing some scat porn. He went by the stage name of two cocks.

I found The Quick And The Dead entertaining. Some of the style of the filming bugged me, and Sharon Stone trying to act like a tough guy was annoying. But entertaining none the less.

Has anyone else been watching Death Valley Days on Encore Westerns? The show comes across as a little dated with the "hosts" but overall they're an enjoyable watch.
Looking back at my lists on here I think I ranked "Cheyenne" too low, revisiting it for the first time in a couple decades and it's grown on me.
