I've resisted my kids urging on True Grit for the same reason.
The only reason I caved and watched it was because I wanted to see how Bridges did. I enjoyed it, which brings me shame.

That is a phenomenal movie. Better than the original except for no Wayne. never could stand Kim Darby. Hailee Steinfeld was awesome.
Negative: Matt Damon. Tool couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.

Highly recommend the new True Grit.
Just finished Godless and was not disappointed (though some will be). I thought the characters were great, and when you would expect them to go into the idiot category (just to piss me off), they all remained pretty true to form.

Grit Channel on Dish has been running Death Valley Days, I've enjoyed seeing some of those episodes again for the 1st time in decades.

He tries too hard. Take consolation that IRL, Big Dan Blocker was scoring with anything that moved. I do. It’s what helps me sleep at night.

Re: Any fans of Westerns here?
Sorry but the new true grit is way better than the old one. Matt Damon is great, lws is dumb. The point of his character is he’s a fucking weenie and he plays it perfectly. Hailee Steinfeld or however you spell it was superb.
The only down side for me was at times Bridges was playing John Wayne more than he was playing Rooster.

However don’t bother watching Brawl in Cell Block 99 by the same writer/director. Not good.

Re: Any fans of Westerns here?
Watching the Big Valley this morning as is my wont during uneventful mornings. The premiere episode was on from 1965. Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck, who was looking kinda hot (might have been the bowl). The thought occurred of how old she was when filming this series. Checked wiki and she was born in 1907, so 58 years old. I'd always thought of her as old during this series. Then the realization dawned that in 1965 she was my age now. Takeaways:
I guess that's why she looked kinda hot.
I'm getting fucking old.
PS - Never knew she was nominated 4 times for the Best Actress Oscar
Stanwyck in '65

I know this will shock OTPT and AU, Goose, but I never had a thing for Stanwyck.

I watched about half of it and got tired. It was fucking brutal. I mean it was good, it was just brutal. I'll finish it soon.
And Josey Wales sucks.

Re: Any fans of Westerns here?
I liked Bone Tomahawk for sure. And it was super gross.
The Outlaw Josey Wales was a great revenge story. In my book there is nothing better than a revenge movie. But the move itself was not that great. It was drawn out, it was kinda boring. They didn't do a great job of explaining how and why Josey was a bad ass. He just all of a sudden was. And then at the end we are just supposed to think that he died in Mexico even though he's in plain sight and everyone in town knows it's him, including the Captain of the bad guy team? I don't know man. Revenge movies are great. From this one, to Hard to Kill, to Taken, to John Wick to the Equalizer. I just felt like I watched 150+ minutes worth of a movie and they could have spent a large portion of that explaining what the fuck was going on as opposed to showing Josey making friends for no reason.

If you're not in the mood for FSU/VaTech - Grit (217 on Dish) has:
El Dorado @ 7pm - an OK watch.
The Searchers at 9:30pm - a classic.

Hang'em High, while from the same era, isn't technically a spaghetti western.

Also, not a fan of Josey Wales (going back). I slot it in just above 2 Mules For Sister Sara and Paint Your Wagon (which are at the bottom) of Clint's westerns.

The 4 year old grandson watched this with me last night, now has a clear career path - he wants to be a Cowboy.

Maybe we talked about it already, but anyone see The Ballad of Lefty Brown? It’s pretty good.
Also, Australia is pumping out some good westerns.

I've never heard of it but will look it up and watch it on your recommendation. I have great respect for any man that would turn down Naomi Watts because she didn't have enough personality. ;-)
