What will be the knockout punch for the human race?

I don't know why, but I think about this a lot for some reason.  Obviously, humans aren't going to continue to roam mother Earth forever.  Eventually there will be no more homo sapiens left here.  I'm sure it's possible that we could advance our technology to the point that we could travel to another habitable planet at some point before Earth goes kaplooey, but the fate of our race here at home is certain.  We will eventually die out and cease to rule this planet, either at our own hand, or by circumstances completely out of our control.

What is going to be the knockout punch for the human race when it is all said and done?  A number of different things could (and some will) happen that could wipe us off the face of the planet..... In no particular order, these are what come to mind:


mega volcanic eruption shuts off the sun

major impact from large space rock blows us the fuck up and shuts off the sun

gamma ray burst microwaves the shit out of us in our sleep

advancement of artificial intelligence to the point that the machines take us out

global nuclear/biological war -or- natural occurrence of an unstoppable worldwide disease = global pandemic

extraterrestrial invasion

surely we won't make it 6 billion years to the point that the sun goes red giant on our ass, but I have to include it just for the sake of completeness

man made pollution, famine related to climate change, fucking up the food chain via over stressing of resources to the point that they collapse and we can't feed ourselves any longer, etc...

sucked into a black hole

ice age changes the climate too quickly for us to adapt and feed ourselves

intended or unintended scientific fuck up that creates some kind of artificial being/life that destroys us in ways we can't even imagine yet

I'm sure there are other things that could cause the complete elimination of humanity, and of the above list, I don't have a favorite theory.  Some of these scenarios I believe to be more likely than others, but it's pretty tough to settle on one answer to this question.  What say you?

But one that's not on your list that I think that's very worrysome is the declining bee population (and we have no idea how to fix it).

I think we cause our own doom with pollution. Due to economic interests, governing bodies will fail to adapt in time before it's too late and our ecosystem is so messed either we let global warming get out control or we get so many toxic chemicals in the food chain that cancer becomes so early onset aor reproductive disorders wipe us out.
Think about it, China and India are about to really pollute more than they already are and more than US ever did. They don't care. I could see nuclear catastrophe playing into this as well.

Okay well my choice is there will not be one. Humans in some form will exist for millions of more years. Beyond that, speculation is impossible because the race will change do much. Perhaps long before that though we may merge with technology to a degree that the we will be mostly unrecognizable to modern humans. Also we will colonize other planets which could cause speciation over time.

Not to get too crazy, but I wonder if humans getting eliminated on Earth actually eliminates the human race. It could be possible that we exist on another planet.

There were a lot of crazy things going on with the Egyptian pyramids and all that. Aren't there UFOs in the hieroglyphics? Maybe some people from back then went with the aliens to a new planet and we're just chilling out there in some distant galaxy.

I suppose, yeah, the lingering effects could kill us all but I don't know if that would eliminate everybody. The temperatures would drastically change I'm sure due to the ash, but is that enough to kill every human? Possibly, but I'm not really sure.

Its been awhile since I've seen the show that talks about Yellowstone, but iirc there was a volcano that caused a mini ice age in the 1700 or so. They think that Yellowstone is about 100 times worse than that volcano and would cause a major ice age. That volcano could also still be 1000 years behind schedule, and that isn't much, since I think it erupts every 200k years or so.

I know its a super long schedule and the overdue part works out to be minimal in terms of when it last erupted. It could erupt tomorrow or in 10000 years, and still basically be on time.
