I just asked the help to press my khakis. Need to be ready when the summer residence is open for the season.

A delightful choice. Truly splendid. One can never go wrong with seersucker.

Unless, there is something super compelling... like a fucking awesome meal, or an escort service (for my wife). It seems like a very un-Michigan experience.
Sell me !!
I think the lunch buffet is only $50.
That's what I thought until we ate there. It was $40 just to pay to get in, then the buffet was on top of that. Don't remember what we paid. Sorry, but I loved going there.
I lived on the island for a summer many years (and years and years) ago after High School. All the pot, pussy and party anyone could take for a summer. Great memories.
Back then you could play golf for free on the Jewell after 4 pm if you worked anywhere on the island. Tried many a time to hit the Governor's Mansion on the 7th hole. (they've moved the tee over a lot now. It used to be much closer)
I get the mocking of the place, but I had some great times up there.

My BIL used to work up there in the summer at Jack's Livery Stable, his Uncle owned the place. That's probably been 45 years ago. He might come up this summer to visit the place.
On another note. Talked to a guy there this past summer that's trying to buy a storefront and open a business, he said it's almost impossible to do with the three or four families that control most of the real estate downtown.

Re: A Michigan Treasure - The Grand Hotel
Cupola Suites project completed in 2019 to restore Grand Hotel's original 1887 roofline
Originally built in 1887, the hotel had dormers sticking out of the roofline along the 3rd floor. Those were eliminated after the 1915 season to expand the third floor rooms, Hayward said.
The Cupola Suite project has brought them back.
"In a way, while they're a floor higher, we do feel architecturally this (expansion) is taking the hotel back to the way it was when it was originally constructed," said Hayward, who has worked at Grand Hotel since 1985.
It was a challenge, he said.
"Any time you take the roof off a 130-year old building you never know what you're going to find," Hayward said.

apparently there are a bunch of self-important politician/journalist types at a conference on Mackinac Island and, I'm assuming, at the Grand Hotel.
can you imagine the pastel-colored living hell that would be like?
I generally don't like to curse, but holy hell.

Pretty sure the Governor was there signing the insurance bill and all the self-important people had to witness it.

Re: A Michigan Treasure - The Grand Hotel
Sounds like someone might get himself canned on the island:
"The Detroit Regional Chamber's annual Mackinac Policy Conference draws a well-heeled crowd of business people, elected officials, lobbyists and philanthropists. And a whole herd of reporters, which is one reason your columnist was super surprised to round a corner in a very public Grand Hotel hallway and come across a lobbyist for an oil company loudly expounding on negotiations with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel over the company's plans to replace an aging pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac. "

ONAWAY, Mich. — Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry is having another vessel constructed to take passengers to and from one of Michigan's top tourist destinations.
The company says the $4 million ferry is being built by Moran Iron Works of Onaway. It's scheduled to start operating in summer 2020.
The 210-passenger boat will be wheelchair accessible and have an aft deck for luggage, bikes and strollers. Instead of propellers, the vessel will have four jet drives intended to provide a quieter, smoother and faster trip.

FTR, another huge minus to the island... You know it's like $25 just to GET to the island? A family of 4 can be out over a hundo before vacation even begins. And (of course) its a govt created monopoly for the ferrys back and forth. So there is no real shopping around for deals.
But the scenery is nice.

Re: A Michigan Treasure - The Grand Hotel
and, if you have questions about the dress code:
Since every evening at Grand Hotel is a special occasion, after 6:30 p.m. dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentlemen are required to wear a suit coat, necktie and dress pants; no denim or shorts. This applies for all areas inside the hotel with the exception of the Cupola Bar. Children 12 years and older are expected to be in dress similar to the adults. Click here for more information.

Re: A Michigan Treasure - The Grand Hotel
finally, if you'd like to experience the majesty of tulips and/or fall colors:
if you have other questions, I'll do my best to get you answers so you and your family can enjoy the Grand Hotel as much as me and my family do.
Every season on Mackinac Island is unique and beautiful in its own colorful way. Tulips typically bloom in the early spring around mid-May, followed by lilacs in the first few weeks of June. Grand Hotel gardens are always blooming with seasonally appropriate flowers. The fall colors in Northern Michigan can be hard to predict as it depends on the temperature of the season. If we have a warmer summer, the colors tend to change later in October than usual. Michigan weather makes everything on Mackinac Island and throughout the state unpredictable, but that is what makes visiting here a Pure Michigan experience no matter what month it is.
if you have other questions, I'll do my best to get you answers so you and your family can enjoy the Grand Hotel as much as me and my family do.
